It was ranked in about the middle of the WB's program lineup (over 50% of their schedule ranks WORSE than BOP; their sitcoms aren't exactly setting the world on fire  [Whatever possessed them to remake Family Affair?! ] ).

Tim Curry = actor
He played Dr. Frank-N-Furter in "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" (hence the reference to leather and fishnet stockings ;) ).

Because it's "too dark" for the WB.

Levin is a mama's boy.

Do you know Mr. Levin personally? If not, then please stop with the personal attacks. They are not helping the campaign.

sorry (but I think he is one)

I don't know what kind of a man Jordan Levin is. All i know from what i've seen and read is that from the begining he wanted the show to fail because he is a Batman fan. For the record i don't hate mr Levin but i am angry with him for screwing with BoP fans.

01-01-2003, 07:57 PM
HB ... Lisa is right. As i have said before I doubt that Levin is solely responsible for the shows situation. No one within the WB has that much power single handedly.
If thats what you think ... fine no one here is telling you what to think, but the personal attacks are somewhat childish and aren't really helping anyone.
And before anyone says anything yes it was me that said that I wanted him dressed in a chicken suit running up and down hollywood blvd. so all the BOP fans can throw pies at him. But I would like to point out that is very different than calling the man names.
Yeah I think he is a twit too, but enough already, lets focus our attention in saving the show or all this will be a moot point.

OOO don't mention that movie. Clowns....*shudders* They're scary. I think he plays a lot of evil characters so I can't really see him playing in a family show.
I don't see how BOP did so awful compared to what gets churned on tv these days! It was a great show that needed some work, but it was a good show!
I can try and keep my mouth shut about Levin-but I think he might be insane. ...just a thought. :) Shutting up now

Tim Curry has also played the Butler in the movie "Clue". I loved that movie <g> watched it all the time when I was a kid, to bad I suck at the game.
Earth 2...now there's another show that met an untimely doom...on a cliffhanger to boot <grumble>.

Personal attacks are pointless without knowing the person being attacked... still, it's a natural reaction, so whatever.
Most of the WB's shows are terrible; the only things I find even remotely interesting at this point are Angel and, rarely, Smallville (I despise Suped Up Man). Other than BoP, of course.
If anything, BoP needs more in the way of character development, something they only occasionally get into. I really want to care about these characters (without feeling like a pavlovian dog), but the writers keep missing oppurtunties to do things, and keep killing the villians and sub-characters that could really add more depth to the whole thing.
...
I feel like the entire writing stuff should watch the entire first season of Twin Peaks... now that was good writing...
Dammit, I like this show...

We do, too, CotC and many of us recognize that the writing could be much better. Having said that, it seemed to improve with Lady Shiva and NOTB. The show has problems with character development - we have never seen Barbara teaching; we have never seen where Dinah lives at the Clocktower; we have never seen Helena's apartment, etc... The reality is that they need a new set of writers or a head writer with a firm sense of how to develop characters. Retooling would be a great option.
Very much agree. Those are just some of the things that would need to be added to the show. Here's hoping that the campaign works and we would get to see it someday! (crosses all fingers for retooling possibility)
As for a new set of writers (crazy idea here) but hey could get a fan consultant or something. Fans know what they want to see and what they don't. It would help some. But I agree the eps have gotten better.

I agree with you one hundred percent. The writing I would say is the biggest problem with the show. Sure lots of action and one liners is great...but when that's over, then what? Right now it's alotta nadda, and it just sometimes doesn't leave one walking away from an episode feeling fulfilled.
I mean, if I wanted to immerse myself in a world of two dimensional characters I'd break out some of my video games...but unfortunately some of my video's have more involving stories then what the writers have given us.
And I agree as well with you on caring about the characters. There is no sense of danger for the main characters, and no real sense of urgency to any fight scene. When I watch an episode I know from the start the villian is going to die and we will move on to new territory in the next episode. I want a story arc, I want character developement. Hell I wouldn't even mind an episode that was action light, and just centered around the three leads (a day in the life of the birds, if you will. Allow them to be goofy and play off one another, excellent character developement that way...not to mention they have great chemistry when they share scenes together, I want more of that!!!)

That's what I want too. And I have faith that if they sell to another network, or reverse the cancellation, we will get to see those changes made.
They never should have cancelled because they could have used our feedback to improve the show. That's how shows become a success. You correct mistakes made.
Well I'm going to write more letters and send more comics now...
And to CotC: go to "The Comic Shop" on Arbutus/4th and ask for the discount bin - you'll find a bunch of Batman comics for a dollar each. (As well as my flyers :))

I personally think that the WB should keep the show, retool it and let it run it's course. Yeah I can't stand the network, and the only time I watch the network is when Birds of Prey is on. Sure the WB wants to remain a family network, but who's to say ALL families are made up of parents and little children? And since when do ALL teenagers want to see mindless drivel, and who's going to be doing who next week? I sure didn't want to see that when I was a teen, I was all about Star Trek TNG and DS9, and Earth 2 for a while.
If WB gets rid of BoP, and let's Angel's ratings get driven down so low it'll NEVER pull itself up (it's a tough time slot period, for any show, and apparently NO genre show is fairing well thus far this season. Last I checked, which was a while ago mind you, Twilight Zone, Enterprise, Buffy, and Angel were all dipping when it came to ratings), I think the network is just going to paint itself into a corner. Instead of focusing the network in one single direction, i.e. "family" shows, it should diversify itself, diversity draws more viewers. More viewers normally means more money, and isn't money what is the main goal in the long run?
I think if the WB bothered to merchandise or promote some of it's "darker" shows this season, they'd end up seeing just how many fans and how much money can be earned in the long run. And the most merchandising I've seen for Birds of Prey is a t-shirt and poster that you can only win through time consuming efforts. I don't have time to win the t-shirt, but I'd be more then happy to shell out 15 or 20 bucks for it.
Ripley
The sad part is, as a writer, I want to like this show. I sit there and study every episode, pick everything apart, and try to see what it means and where it's going- it's gotten to the point where I can generally appreciate something for the mythology as much as for the actual product.
That being said, I'd love to, you know, actually *write* for this show- it's not like they have anything to lose at this point- and I work cheap (free)... the show and it's mythology just have so much to offer.
A friend of mine and I were going over some of this earlier tonight, and I gave him an outline for what I'd do with a second season of BoP, and he was blown away. If anyone actually wants proof that I'm not just vapour, I've got references and scripts and whatnot (the ones I'm willing to show people are all registered and copyrighted, so let know).
It does need retooling- a lot of retooling. The characters need consistency and continuity, and certainly more than one liners; they certainly need one liners and dialogue that is consistent with their character. As it stands, the dialogue between all of them is pretty much interchangeable, and that just bugs the hell out of me. The actors do a wonderful job with what they've got, for the most part, but that's not saying much.
The CG is overused and poorly done- whoever wrote the physics on the trenchcoat screwed it up, and badly. Slick was well done, though- it's the stock CG that kills it.
The meta-human concept is overplayed, too; if there's so many of them, people would notice. People tend to be really bad at keeping secrets, and metas would still be human. Hell, I could explain that away, too, and logically, though I say nothing until I get an official word from someone...
Sxygrrl- you should go to the Red Door Lounge on the 11th, and check out the Broken Saints Benefit; you want good story telling, check them out.
There's so much potential here... the WB, as usual, are missing the point. Batman and Robin did poorly because it was light- Gotham is a dark place, Batman is a dark character. There's depth here, and it needs to be explored more.
For the love of Benoit, someone let me tell a story here...

Crazy Vancouverans, trying to alert the other of their points of interest in the city, that's not going to work, you silly fools.
I have to go do some Broken Saints stuff now... be back later. I somehow doubt I'm sleeping tonight, either.
Also flashbacks, dreams and do one where Dinah reads someone's mind. Show us more about the characters. Maybe even show old pics or something like that.
I mean you could do a flashback by having Dinah remember sitting by the window waiting for her mom.
Helena could easily look at pictures. And please someone get the intro out of there!
You want this show to keep going then I have those three little words that fans hate to see "To be continued!'
Leave off with a major cliffhanger and trust me the fan outburst would be big. Never let me near a TV Show! ;) Just kidding.
I'm with CotC. I love to write as well. But the writing is so/so to say the least.
That's what I say let fans write for the show. Or consult or something.
I agree the WB could be making tons of money already with merchandise. I mean its not that expensive making a T-shirt. Make keychains, sell posters trust me people will by. I want a Bop calendar.
Actually Ripley78 for the Bop poster you just have to sign up 3 people! ;)

Heh heh that's the problem, I don't know 3 people who would actually sign up <snicker>. Most people I know aren't even remotely interested in anything on the WB site to even consider signing up <shrug>. I am the unique/wierd one in my group <g>.
Besides, I snagged the poster off of Ebay, I want the stupid t-shirt :D Though a calendar and production stills would be nice too <g>.
But I agree with you though, there needs to be more background on the characters. I want to know why Helena is so tortured, sure her mother got killed in front of her, and that would require a bit of therapy, but it just doesn't explain why she is "supposedly" so tortured (sorry, sarcastic one liners doesn't strike me as tortured). I wanna know how Barbara handled getting shot, I wanna know how it affected her then, and I want to see it's affects now (we got a glimpse in Lady Shiva). And I seriously want to know about Dinah and the Redmonds, something had to be bad wrong to drive her to leave with no real plan.
I would be more then happy to sign up as a fan consultant, that's a job I'd definitely look forward to daily <snicker>
Ripley
Ah yes a calendar and production stills would be very nice.
Really need consultants. Look at CSI or ER. They have consultants for the medical parts of the show. This way they would have fans who know what they want to see. And what should be added. Also it would help because a fan is a step away from production. (Why writers aren't always good at editing their own work).
Why not I would do it as well! :) Actually I think we have a lot of people willing to do that job as well! ;)

I wish there 's a law against cancelling shows for reality shows.
I loathe 'reality' television. I worked on a farm in Israel for about a year, about a 45 minute walk from Syria and 20 kliks from Lebanon. The first week I was there, a group of Syrians came over the border and burned down the Avacado fields we were supposed to be working in... and ended up working in, anyway- killing the old stumps, digging them out of the earth, digging up the old irrigation system, putting in a new irrigation system, and planting new trees. Kept as busy for a month or so...
I'd like to see any of the 'people' from survivor do that.
Also, I just feel I should repeat this- I am more than willing to work for *free* in any position on the writing staff. If anyone official is reading this, email me and I'll send you some credentials and sign any NDA you put in front of me, and off we'll go.

Oh, I guess I misinterpreted it.
earth 2? wow that takes me back to the days of icecream and my daddys lap.... wait.. im eating ice cream now, but now im taller than my dad so i cant sit on his knee for a full hour or he gets cramps. I thought three birds and a baby had a good story too it, thats the ep that got me hooked, until then i would have shrugged of the cancelation, but when Helena started to cry I felt bad for her, like i do when most girls cry (unless they smell, thats just gross), plus the whole constellation think made me feel like maybe her mother told her the same thing and that she thought about it a lot, well, im sleepy now.
