yes the official series started with a book called birds of prey with only oracle and the black canary as the two members......however
the start of it starts after the paperback novella called the death of joker..that book tells what the joker did to barbara gordon to try and drive batman insane.....he caught her , did all sorts of horrible things and then as an added sick point shot her point blank in the back and left her to die....I for one am definitely glad they did not fully follow that storyline . it was a sickening plot and not really meant for normal everyday comic readers due to its mature nature of sexual viloence and gritty realistic psychopathic tendencies of the main character the Joker....
the birds of prey comic books are considerably different they treat the huntress black canary like secret agents for the mysterious oracle agency(alias oracle)...they handle missions that slip thru the cracks of everyday normal comic book superheroes...
the first book for example has black canary trying to protect a man that is being stalked by eco terrorists...its really a cool concept and the tv series is definitely similar to it....

CF, are you going to get anything right? Joker shot her while the commish was visiting her at her apt. And he shot her though the abdomin, where the bullet went through and shattered her spine. It was the commish. who was captured by the Joker and tortured, not Babs. Last thing, it was "The Killing Joke", not D.O.J.
At least get your facts right BEFORE answering!

GEEZ! Where's Jesse when you need him?!

To answer your question, there have been several BoP miniseries from the mid-90s to now. Most of them are collected in Trade Paperback form. There are currently two Trade Paberbacks entitled "Black Canary/Oracle/Huntress: Birds of Prey" and "Birds of Prey: Old Friends, New Enemies."

"Black Canary/Oracle/Huntress: Birds of Prey" collects the following mini-series:

-Black Canary/Oracle: Birds of Prey
-Birds of Prey: Revolution
-Lois Lane/Black Canary/Oracle: Birds of a Feather (Showcase '96)
-Birds of Prey: Manhunt (featuring the Huntress and Catwoman)

"Birds of Prey: Old Friends, New Enemies" contains

-Birds of Prey: Wolves mini-series
-Birds of Prey: Black Canary/Batgirl one-shot (you have to read it to believe it)
-Birds of Prey monthly series issues 1-6

These two TPBs are the best place to start for BoP comics. If you don't care about collections, you can search for back issues of the series (though a lot are being used for the campaign, its still work a look).

DC also recently printed a 2-part Birds of Prey miniseries that was just released a few months ago. Those are "Birds of Prey: Catwoman/Batgirl" (Part 1) and "Birds of Prey: Catwoman/Oracle" (Part 2). It's a pretty decent read, and it should be pretty easy to find.

Hope this helps.

Dray .. sorry been away ... but i'm back on the boards.

Your absolultely right ... It was The Killing Joke, BUT Babs was shot AND tortured by the Joker. The Joker even sent them pictures of Babs. I'll pull out my issue and double check, but thats not something you easily forget.

Thanks for the helping hand and the great info Stoyboy.

Mmmmm.....It sure seems to me that it was Jim who was tortured just before J came along and shot her.....Quickly! To the Bat-computer!

Joker was found missing from Arkham, he goes to Barbara's apartment, shoots her, captures the visiting Jim Gordon, takes pictures of the crippled Barbara in an undressed state (hints of rape as well) then triesto drive Jim Gordon mad with the images and stuff in the fun house of an amusement park the Joker had just bought.
