The building that she jumped off of and landed on the ground. 5 stories means the building is 5 floors tall. That is the drop that Huntress always does in BOP.

Well according to the link Liz provided the main characters name is Selene.

jaguarin
04-19-2003, 05:59 PM
Selene? Helena? Long black coat, poster, short hair, close-up to her eye, jump buildings, kind of city, night...

Well, analyzing all those elements, nop, I don't think is a copy...

Sxygrrl Huntress

I'm sorry. I can't help but laugh at this entire thread. First it is a complete joke that they are making such an obvious rip off, then to reading everyone's symbols instead of text (poor Jag is going to have a hard time translating that :D) and now to learn the lead character is Selene...

LMAO!!!

I can't decide if they were trying to copy Helena or Selina...

StoyBoy720

That's totally insane.

But one question: When did Underworld go into production? Could have technically started before BOP aired or had material sent out, especially since it seems to be a decent special effects film.

Not that I'm giving it an excuse because they did basically take the main elements and style of BOP and gave it a budget. Especially the main website for the film, with "Selene's" cat-like crouching. Hmmmm....

Maybe we could show that to Barry Meyer/Bonnie Hammer. It shows the BOP made a bigger impact than we thought it was. Immitation is the sincerest form of flattery. Anyone feel like rubbing it in to Jordan Levin while we're at it? lol

Well you don't have to stop liking Kate for it... any actress would take the job.

They obviously did steal elements and the poster because the unaired pilot of BOP was filmed before it was picked up as a series and various media and such did receive copies. So somehow it got to whoever is doing this movie, they liked what they saw and stole it.

This sucks!!! I always said that BOP has extreme potential so why is it the WB never realized this??? This sucks!!!

About the only differences I see are that (1) the head of the gargoyle in the BOP poster is now a watermark in the moon on the Underworld one and (2) Selene(?) is packing a .45. The color scheme has been changed too.

Other than that, the two are virtually identical! :fume: :fume:

I think Sony may have just done us a favor. Eventually, WB is going to file a cease-and-desist order against them. When they do, odds are it'll hit the media ... and they won't be able to mention Underworld without mentioning BOP in the same story.

It just might pique the curiosity of the masses. There's GOTTA be a way to capitalize on this somehow.

The wheels of justice turn slowly, RG.

I would counsel patience.

If they wish to defend their intellectual property -- no matter how distasteful to them the intellectual property in question may be -- they have NO CHOICE but to take action. Otherwise, they would have no standing to sue in future BOP-related trademark infringement suits.

^ LOL :D

Anyway, the first thing WB will probably try to do is seek a cease-and-desist injunction against Sony, ordering them to stop using all promotional materials which infringe upon WB's intellectual property rights. I seriously doubt it will go beyond that stage.

Sony just may be doing this on purpose. Once this suit hits the media (and it will, eventually), the media won't be able to mention the suit without mentioning Underworld ... thereby giving Sony free publicty for the upcoming movie.

It's not the first time one company has tried to mimic another's ad campaign. Three years ago (when the movie Chicken Run came out), Burger King tried to ape Chik-Fil-A's ad campaign. As a result, Chik-Fil-A sued ... and got a cease-and-desist injunction against Burger King ordering them to drop the portions of their ad campaign which infringed upon Chik-Fil-A's intellectual property.

Reese'Girl
04-21-2003, 02:20 AM
yeah but they'll also have to mention BOP when it eventually goes to the media and that will give us some free publicity! Maybe we could start some sort of campaign against Underworld and then they could mention BOPO.com an we'll get more people to join our site and our campaign to bring BOP back. We could make this work!

The media is byas, it's a plain fact.

They don't want to get big name companies pissed off at them, that's my opinion.

I think I'm loosing it- whan I first looked at the movie poster I thought that the person so plainly imitating Helena was some Japanese actor. Did anyone else pick up on that, or was it just me? Must be the hair *mutters to self*

When I first read about this, trust me, my blood was boiling. But as I read through the thread, I started laughing at all the funny characters everyone was using instead of swear words (different every time!) and thinking. When I clicked on the link to scifiwire I looked at some of the other stuff on the page.

Have you noticed that lately there haven't been many original movies? I mean, it's all either 1) based on a book or book set (Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings) or Comics (X-Men) or 2) A sequel to something (Harry Potter 2, Lord of the Rings 2, X-Men 2). Also- the sequals seem to be a continuation of movies that are based on something!

So that's one thing about Underworld. To my knowledge it's totally original, not a copy of something else (I could be wrong though)

Otherwise it's totally a copy!

Also- the sequals seem to be a continuation of movies that are based on something!

------------------------------------------------------------------------

First of all ... movies based on books or other source material are hardly anything new they have been being done for decades ... for example.

Dracula
Frankenstien
Gone with the Wind
To Kill a Mockingbird
Lizzy Borden
Withering Heights
Auntie Mame
War of the Worlds
The Scarlet Pimpernel
Jecykll & Hyde
Patton

Just to name a few of the top of my head that aren't all that recent .. I could probably come up with at least 10 to 15 more taht were done before the 1960's .. given a bit more time.

Second ... sequels are instant money makers expecially if the first was a blockbuster. But there have been a few sequels that have outshined or done just as well as the originals at the box office:

Aliens
God Father Part II
Star Trek .. The Wrath of Kahn
Terminator 2
X-2 (yeah I know it hasn't been released yet but I'm willing to bet it will do well)
Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets
Matrix II
Superman II

And Underworld is HARDLY an original concept ... GRANTED it puts together several concepts that have never been used in combination before ... but that hardly makes it original.

By the way Underworld REEKS of Mascarade as well. The last TRUELY orginal concept I saw in a film was the Matrix ... like it or not thats ORIGINAL!

D ... I could understand the Crow .. I never read Razor .. so i can't comment there ... but what similarities other than the guns do you assocaite with Underworld and Ghost ??

I saw Vampire / The Mascarade, Crow, Spawn, Tainted Blood and Blade in the preview. But the action shots, costumes and backgrounds had BOP all over them.

Whats Razor about .. should I pick it up ??

DrayvensCrow
04-22-2003, 12:31 AM
There are things about it that scream "Ghost" to me....as far as Razor goes, she is like Eric D., in as she is dead but in a way, alive. She uses large, razor-sharp gauntlet-style weapons in her fight against the demon hordes roaming the Earth....It might be hard to find, but if you can find it, try it. She has done crossovers with The Crow, Warrior Nun Ariela, etc. It was published by Antartic press, if I remember right....

Thanks DOCMIDNITE! And jaguarin!

UNDERWORLD: This line is based on the movie of the same name. What's it about? Let me use "movie math" to explain. ROMEO & JULIET + DRACULA vs. THE WOLFMAN+ THE MATRIX= UNDERWORLD. The raw footage of the film I saw looked cool and the figures are very well sculpted. I'm especially fond of the lead female character sitting atop a gargoyle in a Batman/ Spiderman/ Daredevil -ish pose. Sure to be a hit with Goths everywhere. - http://www.toymania.com/toyshows/tf2003/full/drake_mezco.shtml

They even admit it! Ok sure they said Batman instead of Bop but still.

The two worth seeing are

Ripoff aside, does anyone else think this movie is just one giant tax write off for Sony? Seriously, it has straight to video written all over it. A $25 million dollar budget for an ACTION movie!?! An action movie starring a flavor of the month, "it girl", that no one outside of Vanity Fair magazine gives a crap about, let alone has yet to have a hit movie here in the States.

Seriously, the warning bells went off in my head when I saw that the biggest star they could find for their lead was Kate Beckinsale. Really. This has suck written all over it.

If there's anyone to blame, it's Sony (THEY drafted the marketing campaign, after all ;) ).

No, of course that never occured to me. Why does this movie have to have a megastar? To make money, of course. It's a known fact that people are more willing to see a movie if there's a recognizable actor attached to it. Kate Beckinsale is NOT a recognizable star. I guarantee you if the producers of this movie had a choice between Beckinsale and Angelina Jolie, we'd be discussing Jolie and her new $100 mil budget movie.

Second, the budget is another huge clue. Sony is not some small independent company and the most they're willing to shell out for the budget is $25 mil? That says to me they're willing to shell out the bucks to make the movie, but don't have enough confidence in either the premise or its star to give it the blockbuster treatment.

Another huge clue, the release date for this movie is in September. That's almost as big a month for studio dumping its movie's as March. IF they had confidence this movie would do well, they'd release it during the summer or spring. The fall is not known for being good to action movies.

And, just for the record, I never said KB was untalented. But, since you brought it up, I think she's just another in a long line of amazingly bland actresses shoved down the collective publics throats being sold as "great".

AshDinaRachLvr
04-26-2003, 01:34 PM
Ever hear of a little movie called Spiderman? Broke all kinds of Box Office records and it starred Tobey Mcguire. He is nowhere near a MEGASTAR. So it isn't necessary to have a HUGE star in order to achieve the #1 movie. And here's another, The Lord of The Rings. Mostly a cast of unknowns with a few semi-HUGE stars. It did amazing. Harry Potter as well. It's all about the movies appeal. Not who stars in it.

DrayvensCrow
04-26-2003, 02:56 PM
Tobey McGuire isn't a pretty boy, which is what the role called for(a non-pretty boy). LOTR you could get away with that type of casting. Now as for Sir Ian McK., HE is a big name! Harry Potter is a kid's movie mainly. You could get away with putting trained monkeys in those roles. The success for ALL of these films is partly hype, partly story and BIG part fx. Would Spidey have been as big a success if he had the same fx as Nicolas Hammond did in the TV series? No. Rememer, there are still Marvel fans out there that are angry for the way Spidey came out (organic web shooters, etc.).

trancer
04-26-2003, 04:06 PM
AshDnaRachLvr, I'm not trying to be argumentative and there's really no reason to be snide, but what's your point? Pointing out that Spiderman had Tobey McGuire cast in the lead role ignores the fact that it had a $130 mil budget. "Lord of the Rings"? Each part of the trilogy is budgeted at appr. $100 mil. That was a $300 mil investment by New Line.

Similarities, cast of unknowns, sure, THE big difference, blockbuster treatment by the studios funding the project. Underworld is NOT being given the blockbuster treatment by Sony. Underworld's budget is $25 mil. Starring an actress very few people know of, released during a statistically slow month ticket sales wise.

My point isn't that low budget movies with no name stars can't be box-office hits. Never said that. My point is THIS movie isn't being treated like a potential hit. It's being treated a tax write off.

And not even Dray .. I've seen kids that can't act for shit ... the kids in HP are very talented ... remember they have to do the charactors in the books justice .. which IMO they have done twice so far VERY VERY well. Yeah you could argue that its the directors .. but if the talent isn't there .. the directors have nothing to work with.

And as far as kid actors go Haley Joel Ossmett can act better than alot of adults.

Mt Big Fat Greek Wedding proves that .. true it wasn't a blockbuster hit right off the bat .. BUT it only cost 5 million to make and grossed over 400 million eventually.

By the way LOTR ... all three movies were shot on a budget of 240 million and becuase of Peter Jackson came in UNDER budget by close to 10 million ... it was only after Fellowship proved to be the blockbuster it was that more money was invested to sup up the remaining 2 films.

And also Peter Jackson .. didn't work on a salary .. he knew was he was doing and what was going to happen so he actually negocaited that his salary be based on the box office gross ... pretty smart man if you ask me.
