Best episode so far! Love Dinah's new power, and that she actually got to do something. Lori Loughlin was good, too. Finally found out about Reese's father, and the Reese/Helena relationship is getting interesting.
Hopefully more people (especially Nielsen families) watched this, so the ratings improve.

Awesome, AWESOME EPISODE!!!
I am really impressed. This is BY FAR, the best BoP episode thus far. Great acting all around, and great action.
Great to see Dinah finally do something, other than whine and act like an annoying brat. I liked her new power. There's some promise for her, afterall. Its pretty obvious that Dinah is going to be the next Black Canary.
Lori L. did a great job as "Black Canary." I never thought that she would play this type of role so well, but she did.
Best part of all, Reese's dad is Hawke, the killer of Black Canary. I never saw that coming.
This series has some promise, afterall. It is getting better and better. It has some great potential, and I hope that the WB doesn't cancel this series.

Well, I just started watching this show and its pretty good. I liked seeing Lori Loughlin. She did a good job. I havent seen her act in a while. This is only the 2nd eppy I watch so I am kinda confused as to how the cop fits into all of this, but I kinda got some of it at the end. So is this a love/hate thing between him and the huntress? I dunno why, but I didnt care much for the canary's power. Don't kill me for this, just didnt ... and I cant explain it. Next week's looks pretty good too.

I loved the ep, but Dinah seemed to take her mother's death a lot better than I thought she would. I know she hardly knew her, but still, I thought she'd be a little more upset than she was. Sweet ending and I'm glad Dinah got a little more action this ep. Now, when's Barbara's turn?

Kitz! Nice to see ya here. ;P
I loved this episode. The beginning was a bit boring, but later on the story well was acted out and the relationship between Caroline and Dinah was obviously not much. Overall this is one of the best episodes so far. I wish the relationship between Helena and Jesse speeds up though. It's getting annoying. And Jesse being the son of Al Hawk? Weird storyline which I'm hoping the writers are going to explain later.

WOW! In my opinion, this was the best episode so far. I loved, loved, loved it. Quite different from the other episodes, in a good way. I liked the fact that it centered around the relationship between Dinah and Black Canary, rather than try to keep fight scenes and love-hate scenes between Huntress and Reese as the main aspect. Writing was better, but still quite campy. It's a bit expected, and a bit appreciated. One of the great things about this show is that it realizes that it's a comic-based TV show dealing with superhuman powers and heroes fighting villains, and doesn't try to be overly realistic. It's pleasantly cheesy. :)
Lori Loughlin was fantastic as Black Canary. The end had me cringing and then gaping. They could have done a lot more with her character, but I can see why they'd want to add some more character development to Dinah (basically, because she had NO character development since the Pilot, until this episode XD). But yeah, still came as a bit of a surprise.
It was also neat to see Hunter really opening up to Reese, what with giving him the communication ring and all. Lotsa things going on with the characters! (I'm a nut for character development, if you couldn't tell). And Dinah's new telekenetic powers. MORE CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT! WHEEPEE! And the fight scenes weren't as overdone as they have been in the past episodes. The only thing that bothered me was the fire effect at the end, during the explosion. Cut-and-paste, anyone? It looked... bad. ::higgles:: But it didn't take away from the episode itself.
I hope this is a sign that we can expect far better things from the upcoming episodes, now that we have things happening in them that can actually carry over into the next episode, rather than the anthology-like series of almost unrelated stories. Ah, I smell the sweet smell of... good television? Yes, I have a keen sense of smell. ::cracks up:: All in all, excellent episode. Best yet. Makes me wanna dance.

Well I can safely say that this is my FAVOURITE episode so far!!
The Black Canary was kickass... I loved her beyond belief!! Dinah's new power is also impressive! She has so much potential and its not even half way through the season! lol! I love her character as well!!
It's too bad that Black Canary died at the end however... Lori Loughlin did an AMAZING job at portraying her in my opinion... I loved it!
Also, it was awesome to see the storyline between Jesse and Huntress finally getting somewhere! (It was b4 but its just going faster now).. I really like it ;)!! I was actually pretty surprised to hear that Jesse is Al Hawk's son... I hope they will continue on with that... and they obviously will.. lol
As I said, my favourite episode so far! Loved it!

Don't count the Black Canary out yet, no body, no mention of a body, so I'm guessing she was presumed dead. The door is still open for a return in the future.
Dinah, I love her even more. Nice to see her get some feature time and see that she has been training. And her new power, excellent. I hope we see more Huntress/Dinah practicing or fighting side-by-side in the future. Dinah's definatly getting there. I always liked Dinah, but I loved Dinah tonight.

Well, by far the best episode of the season, a big improvement. Too bad Black Canary was killed off... (or so we think ;) ) And I'm loving Dinah's new power as well.

Ok heres my thoughts:A good episode that once again was totally predictable.A routine action story that was enlivened by nice characterzation.Wonderful to see Rachel getting a little more spotlight.Lori Laughlin was good as the black canary, she has moved on in her acting skills since the series full house.I would have liked to have seen her in black canarys original black outfit with the fishnet hose but oh well....
However the villian of the story "Al Hawke" was as lame as the come.A typical rent-a-villian!Stephen McHattie has played creepy bad guys before but here he just ranted and raved and thats it.And the scene were hes punched out by Dinah has to rate as one of the all time most embarrassing scenes for any villian I have seen. However the revelation that he is Reeses dad did surprise me so kudos to the producers for that one.Lets hope they drop more bombshells like that in future episodes.
The Reese-Huntress relationship is finally moving along.Liked the end scene with the ring. However I hope to high heaven that he will not tell Huntress "I do not even know your name">ahrgggg!!!Sorry moving on,I have to say the kid in me was thrilled to see the canary cry in action,I mean I grew up seeing the black canary in the comics do it all the time so excuse the fan boy in me as I shout AWESome!!!
I do not believe canary is truly dead,if hawke survived you can bet she did.
Once again poor Dina Meyer is given little to do but be the den mother of the group.Wise up people,Oracle can kick A### like nobodies business.Hell that brief fight she did in Three birds and a baby was great!Heres hoping the episode Shiva will allow her to truly shine.
Well to sum up good episode with a nice guest star role for Laughlin, but a lame villian and to predictable storyline keeps Birds from really taking off as it should. My grade B-.

Fabulous episode. I loved it. This episode should save the series. I hope it isn't too late.
Things I loved:
1. Dinah and Helena training in the training room. Dinah actually has fighting skills!
2. Oracle telling Dinah that "this is what we do" and giving her the earpiece. Love Oracle the mentor...
3. Lori Loughlin as Black Canary was super. I hope that she isn't really dead. They didn't find her body, did they?
4. The interplay between Oracle and Dinah and between Oracle and Huntress about Dinah. This relationship/character-based writing is what I am looking for.
Even Reese/Helena didn't bother me too much.
Great episode...

Great episode, though I expected a little more steam out of dinah and carolyn in the begining. And Barabra needs more to do, she was a little to willing to give dinah up to a woman she hasn't seen in ten years.
I love'd helena's jelaousy over dinah's new power.
And they brought gibson back. :)
They death in a burning building definitely leaves doors open. (but not to Soon.)
It wasn't all helena,:) now Oracle needs more to say then just "this is what we do". (though I love the heart she has and the true love she has for dinah and helena) (dina meyer protays this, so well, despite the lack of lines).
Now that they have established her maybe we'll see more of Dinah.
And I would also like to see more of these three tring to carry on normal lifes on the side.
- one last ? what does alfred think of all this?
Well, let me just say, EV, you and I seem to think alike! As soon as I saw the explosion I thought, "But she's not really dead!" I mean, come on - that's the oldest trick in the book when it comes to killing someone in a superhero-spy-espionage movie or show! You see an explosion and assume the person is dead but there's always a way. Until we see her charred body I won't believe it. The phrase that comes to mind is from the sci-fi movie 'The Faculty', and I use it embarrassingly because that's really a cheesy film. But here goes : 'Did you really see what you think you saw?'. Okay, many have said it better in other movies, I bet, but it's in my head, damnit, and I used it. :p We have no proof Canary is dead and they left themselves a pretty nice escape hatch to write her back into the series.
That said, I had such a mix of emotions when she was killed (and since it's not proven she's alive, I'm gonna say killed throughout my post without any "killed" quotes around it.). I was alerted a few days ago by virtue of upcoming episode spoilers that her character died, so I was waiting to see what happened. I didn't think they would kill her off given a) how new the character was and b) how it would affect Dinah (she'd have to mourn for a while after, right? Her character wouldn't be able to participate in the next four episodes at least). So I was hoping it wasn't true, but I was nervous. I didn't know for sure, and since they changed the original way she was gonna die (it used to be liquid nitrogen) I thought maybe the rope would do her in. Then she got her Canary Cry on and I almost wanted to jump out of my chair for joy! I so wanted for her to survive and know her daughter and make a life with her and... well, have a happy ending. And then she was killed and wham... I felt bad. I really wanted her character to stick around. But as Helena said, she was the only one there not a part of Dinah's life, and she really doesn't fit. It's about the three women, not four, and there's too much between Dinah and Carolyn for them to just be backseat plot each week, there's a lot to be explored. I think part of me suspected she'd be killed because there's no way you can write her back out after finding Dinah - "I showed up to save you, but now you've proven you're not my little girl and I'm going to fade into obscurity." Charmed did that with the sisters' father early in the first season and it really kinda sucked. It's a cheap way out! So I knew that something would force Carolyn out, and unfortunately... it was a little permanent. :(
That said...
Wow! This was the best episode yet, and I don't think I can really say more because a string of "Great! Great! Best! Magnificent! Great!" is boring. But I can comment on what I enjoyed!
- The Canary. The whole myth and fame and story around her, the idea of bringing in a new character from the comics, another superhero... she was great! Lori did an amazing job! I don't think she got the chance to show off her skills on a sitcom like Full House, but here, she was wonderful, and by proxy, helped Rachel do a good job too. She was believable and a mix of qualities as Carolyn (sorrow for her mistake, tough as a superhero, yearning for her daughter). And to say nothing of her power! I have no idea what it looked like in the comics and I know it disappointed some people but I personally loved it. I saw it in the trailers and they didn't have the yellow glow so I thought it was just gonna be like she was blowing wind but the effects were done well and I liked the look of it. It would be very interesting to see Dinah develop that someday. I'm not sure seeing her in a uniform would have fit at all; I rather like that she was a superhero but only in civilian uniform.
- Rachel and Lori's interaction. Their scenes together, especially about how Carolyn gave Dinah up, were sprinkled with a sense of the resentment and issues that were buried just beneath the surface and waiting to come out. I like the way that was handled - take it from someone with enough family problems and "I hate you!" feelings to say the way they played it was realistic. Every scene with them turned into a fight as Dinah's anger kept welling up and they didn't play nice and there certainly wasn't any resolve of the issues, which I liked. That kind of stuff can't get fixed in a forty-five minute episode.
- The lack of Helena and Reese. They didn't dominate the episode for once and it was great! I dunno what else to say but yeah, the lack of their scenes was refreshing.
- The Reese/Hawke surprise! I've known for a long time (as most people did) that Reese had a mob father; it's in all the promo material. But I had no idea it was Hawke, and it was almost blindingly obvious! Needless to say, I was shocked and it was a great pull-in. In fact, knowing that (spoiler alert!) Hawke comes back in 1.09 to deal with Dinah and that he's Reese's dad has got me excited... Dinah hated her mom as Reese must his dad, but they're family, and now Reese's dad killed Dinah's mom - yet Dinah is the friend of Reese's new "love interest", Helena. It's kinda twisted up together, but add in the fact that Helena is the daughter of Catwoman and Batman and the Canary is Dinah's mom and I think it's really cool how they're pulling together the parents-and-their-progeny storylines. Wait til Commissioner Gordon shows up! I'm definitely starting to see some weaving continuity and storylines here...
- The way it was shot. It just seemed darker in some scenes for some reason. Very interesting and well done.
- The amount of character conflict and main character-driven storyline versus fight scenes. A nice change of pace.
Here's what disappointed me (and it's not much) :
- McNally had a mustache. No, this isn't anything I should complain about, as it's the smallest bit of continuity, but it just felt off. Then, we haven't seen him in two weeks, but hey - I'll pick where I wanna pick! ;)
- For being superheros, these gals sure do suck sometimes. First in the pilot, Helena lets Jerry the rapist run away to rape another day - big dive into the negative column there dear! You saved Dinah, sure, but what about all the future victims you just helped create? Then in this episode, Canary drops the same ball in the teaser. "I hope you're just a pickpocket or else I'd have to hurt you" - uh, what?! So because someone is just a petty thief and not a murderer it's okay to let them go? You didn't bother to check that he really WAS just a pickpocket as you assumed? You didn't bring him to police anyway? Is this the Huntress and Canary's versions of cleaning up the streets of New Gotham? The street sweepers do a better job! Thumbs down, both of you! :p
Overall, this was my favorite episode so far. I'll be back to post more but I'm off to do the transcript now. Hope lots more people comment so I can come and debate with you all on it! ;)

Opps, I was so distracted by writing up my initial Batgirl fanfic story, I nearly forgot to post comments about the episode. All in all, I'd say the episode was good. I liked the interaction between Dinah and her mother, although at the end, Carolyn dies in that fire and I thoroughly enjoyed the fact The Huntress was not the main attraction this time.
Now, after this, I would expect the show's ratings to go up because I think the appearence of the Black Canary could be a real boost to kick-start the show into a better position.

I completely 100% agree. Lori Loughlin is an amazing actress and until now I've never really respected her on this kind of level... she always seemed so fragile and sweet on Full House and in Casper and such... but now seeing her here it makes her become complete to me... she has both sides ;) Which is awesome! I swear something is different with that woman though... She might have had plastic surgery for like a face lift or something... haha or maybe just her eyebrow were drawn more pointier but it looked really really nice:D I love her with the blond hair as well! She looked very hott, indeed :D!! Anyway, i have to say that Black Canary is/was an amazing superhero... I truly wish somehow she can come back for some other episode to come someday... lol! I thoroughly enjoyed her character :D
Can I just say I love this show. Really. Dinah and Helena training in the training room rocked. I like Dinah now. She grew on me.
I loved how everyone at the start of ep was like you had a daughter? She's your mom.
LOL to Helena calling her big bird.
I knew Barbara would have to hold Helena back.
My question is Dinah's mom really dead or not? Hey I watch Alias you never know!
When did Reese see Helena's eyes change?
Great ep and next weeks looks good to!
God this show better be picked up for a full season!

The problem with new shows and especially with Birds Of Prey, is that the writers have to come up with ways of telling a story without making it seem cliched or rehashed and often times, they don't succeed entirely, although they do compensate for their faltering imagination with action sequences and cheese cake shots of the ladies, especially The Huntress. They just recycle what has been seen and said countless times before.
We've all seen the pain-filled scenes between Dinah and Carolyn about a hundred times already in other programs but needless to say, it had to carry the storyline along so that it would get us, the viewers, to care about Dinah's conflicting feelings about her mother and when Carolyn supposedly dies in that fire, (can you say "cliche"?), we don't get to see more of the bond that should have been allowed to grow between them.
I mean, it's just so much heart-string tugging and even that can become a bit cheezy and we all know this is a superhero show, so it's allowed to be mildly cheezy but that's a whole other issue. Needless to say, the title Sins Of The Mother should have been renamed to "A Mother's Work Is Never Done."

This episode was so much better than all of the rest in every way possible that I wonder if there are new key members of the creative team.
Larry
11-06-2002, 10:51 PM
Yeah, you're right, Lisa. It does make a person wonder if there were changes made to the creative staff on the show. Not that I'm complaining. I think the episode clearly makes an effort to reach out to viewers with a better grasp of the characters involved or least they made a great attempt at it.
Larry
Actually, the creative staff isn't new - it's the same people who brought us the story/script for Prey for the Hunter was well as next week's Primal Scream (with perhaps some slight changes in the story writers). I dunno, next weeks seems to be the same old-same old Helena/Reese story. :-/
I too liked Dinah and Helena training in the beginning and Dinah's new powers. I especially liked Barbara talking to her about the job and kinda seeming in control and teaching her where Canary couldn't, though I think there should've been a little more reaction time for her after seeing the other three go out into combat that she couldn't take part in anymore, not in the same way certainly. And it was also nice to hear her talk about her regrets (or lack thereof) just because of the wheelchair.

I liked last week's ep better, but this was good too--riveting.
I just don't care for gratuitous violence/torture scences--but, ***sigh*** I guess that's what action comics are about.
The relationships are what makes the show. And Ashley Scott's personna.

Something I missed earlier: Dinah apparently made a friend at school during an offscreen moment. Early in the episode, she mentions that she is staying over at Gabby's house. Her school situation must have improved.
I forgot to mention that I liked having Gibson in this episode. I liked how he emailed Barbara to tell her that Dinah was at the bar. He must have her email address memorized.

I too really liked this episode, and thought it was the best episode so far. Even though i missed a little of the beginning. I think it would be really cool if Dinah took on the identity of the Black Canary eventually(in the comic book Dinah is the Black Canary). I hope that Reese doesn't end up being one of those good/bad characters that gets killed off because he can't decide which side to be on. That will not help the show if something like that happens.

11-07-2002, 12:11 AM
I agree with others in that this was by far the best show. The show just seemed to pick up the pace in a lot of areas. The rivalry between Dinah and Helena definately took a big step forward. Lori Loughlin was fantastic. She had that "been there, done that" look in her beautiful eyes that really sold the Black Canary's character. It was great to see her rough up that "pickpocket" at the beginning of the show. Nice contrast from the sweet "Full House" Lori Loughlin! I hope she makes another appearance in the not too distant future. She really adds to the storyline.
I was really hoping Dinah was going to take Carolyn's hand in the bar to see if she was telling the truth, just on the off chance that we might see Lori Loughlin decked out in the full Black Canary outfit.
I was kind of disappointed that they didn't show more of the Huntress taking down Hawke's henchmen. It sounded like she was really kicking some ass while Dinah struggled to free her mother.
Overall a great episode. I have my fingers crossed about the ratings...

As what most people already said, tonights episode rocked all the previous episodes. From the relationship conflicts between Dinah and her mother to Helena and Reese having a better understanding between each other. Overall the episode was just too good to miss.

I too picked up on this and meant to mention it. Is Gabby the blond girl who looked mournfully at Dinah's left-behind tray in PftH in the cafeteria? I feel cheated out of this knowledge that just somehow changed. But I haven't decided whether or not this is something I think we needed to see, because I don't know how it would have contributed overall to the previous episode or to this one. I guess I'll have to wait and see more of the same situations.

The episode was GREAT!! I was so into it. As I was recording it and it came down to the wire - the show clocked in at 39:38 according to my DVD recorder. I can't believe the WB is crapping on this great show!! UGH!!
I do believe Canary is alive, but would have love to see a nice clean fight between Huntress and her.

I like the idea about the strong women handling the crimes of the city. I liked the confrontation between Huntress and Black Canary - very catty. I think the show story line is starting to pick up. It takes time for the shows to develop. Maybe WB doesn't like shows with strong women!!
Larry
11-07-2002, 06:29 AM
Well, there is a show called Charmed and it deals with three strong women who seem to do a great job of handling supernatural evil. So The WB, I would think, does like strong women. Otherwise, why is Charmed still on the air?
I believe The WB is trying to capitalize on the formula that made Charmed a popular show and in many ways, I think they have succeeded with Birds Of Prey but it's the ratings that will tell the tale about whether or not the show will last into the full season.

Why bother saving this show. It's alright to be a fan of comics and admit that this show is sucking bad. If last night's episode was supposed to be so great, how come I walked away from it disgusted. They spend all that time setting up the character of Black Canary and then don't use her at all. She is supposed to be an ass kicker yet she did nothing. Gee, it was nice to see her and Dark Angel, I mean Trinity, I mean Huntress take all that anger towards each other outside. I was stoked to see a kick ass fight between two great combatants and all I got was Huntress using the "I'm a tough chick" look.
Listen, I love the idea of comic based TV shows. If they are done right. So far this show is falling short. Use what you've got. I don't watch a show with super powered people in it to see them sit around and talk ALL the time. I didn't watch The Hulk so I could see Bruce Banner.
I think that this show could be great but it needs some serious work.

Well, thought this was the best episode yet. The acting has gotten much better - think they're getting into their roles. Lori was awesome as BC - I admit I was skeptical about the whole thing.
I was so sure they were going to go with Hawke having killed Jesse's father - that was a surprise to me.
But they MUST get rid of that crappy Helena jumping the rooftops CGI...and the stupid Alfred voiceover...

The show can be saved, because there are a lot of people who like it. So what if it isn't like the comics. I think that some people need to accept it, and move on. If one continues to want everything being like the comics, than they will never enjoy it.
The purpose of Black Canary being there, was to develop Dinah's character more, and give some insight to her background. She wasn't there to just kick ass. The show wasn't about Helena tonight, and I think thats was a good thing.
As for her getting captured, that was quite realistic. She was far outnumbered, and she couldn't use her Canary cry. Regardless of how good of a fighter she was, it would've been pointless for her to fight all those guys.

I like the episode last night. It was good that they brought in Black Canary to clear up the confusion of Dinah. In the DC comics, Carolyn Lance was the first Black Canary and part of the Justice League. Dinah is Black Canary II. Hopefully the show will follow the same pattern as the comic and Dinah will chose to become the second Black Canary.

This eppy was the best so far. I don't see how they would dare cancel it after the developments made in the episode. When Reese revealed that Hawke was his father...in the words of Chandler Bing....Oh...My....Gawd! At first, when he told Reese to call his mother I was thinking....uh-oh, he's having someone stalk Reese's mommy or something. Also when he called him Jesse...instead of just Reese, I knew something was up. I had to keep rewinding and reliving that moment. It was such a breakthrough.

I think that this show gets better and better every week. This episode was awesome. Even though my favorite character is Helena, I was looking forward to this episode and loved it.
First, I know nothing about the comic, so I didn't even know who the Black Canary was, but she was really cool. Lori did a great job. (Now we know how she kept Uncle Jesse in line on Full House. ;) ) That canary cry thing, yeah, that was nifty. Don't you wish you had that when people get in your face. I do have a question about it though- how come it didn't bust Helena's and Dinah's eardrums? Didn't Gibson say it could do that?
Next, the scene with the training was cool. And when they walked out and Carolyn was standing there, and they kept going back and forth with the "your mom's the Black Canary," "you have a daughter?",... etc., that was funny.
Was anybody else just waiting for Helena and Carolyn to take it outside? That would've been cool. I figured that Barbara would have to hold Helena back when her momma was getting put down. (BTW, did anybody else see Ashley's tatoo in these scenes? It's on the small of her back. Spiffy!)
Barbara was great, as always. She really needs an episode to focus on her too. Dina Meyer's such a great actress. I wanted to appluade her when she was telling Carolyn how she didn't regret things. She is so strong because she takes things as they come and doesn't let things stop her from what she was meant to do.
I loved Dinah's character development. The scenes where her and Carolyn were talking, you could really feel her anguish.
Next, there were two things I so totally did not see coming: The Black Canary dying and Hawke being Reese's father. I figured that they would have to get rid of Black Canary somehow, but kill her off? I hope that it's one of those presumed dead, bring her back later deals. I like Reese being Hawke's son. This will be a interesting storyline also.
Finally, I loved the Reese and Helena relationship. I know it will be a while before they hook up for real, but it's so, what's the word, angsty, I guess. That doesn't sound right, but you all know what I mean. I loved it when she gave him the ring and he asked if they were going steady, the look on Helena's face was classic! I just wish she would tell him her name. My boyfriend was laughing at me as I was yelling at the tv, "Tell him your name already!" But, good things come to those who wait.
Next week's episode looks so awesome. I can't wait! I love this show! I know the ratings didn't go up, they didn't go down either. Hopefully this will keep up, and maybe they will go up a little. Maybe the WB will get the idea that they have a great thing on their hands, and give it a chance. We can't let this show get cancelled! Well, I'm off to write letters to the WB. BIRDS OF PREY RULES!!!!!!:D

I like the show and I like that it's not based solely on the comic books. It's giving the show the chance to branch off on familiar characters without taking away from either the comics *or* show.
As for last night nights episode, I loved it. I too think that the Black Canary's not dead and I have a feeling Hawke has her somewhere hidden away. I think that cause it would tie together several loose ends like Jesse/Dinah and Jesse/Helena on the need to work together front on a more personal level. Reese reminds me of Alisa on the Gargoyles cartoon in the way he's eventually gonna end up being a good asset on doingthings the legal front after the crime fighters get done and have to run.
Lori's got a lot of depth on theacting level, just watch her various tv movies on Lifetime (cause we all know they have the "Repeat" gene. ;)) and you'll see more of it than compared to just "Aunt Becky" type roles. Which is also why I'm looking forward to Sarah Brown next week.
As a person from a dyfunctional-functional family, I like the kind of lostness Dinah has and the anger and hurt wrapped inside her too. It's a very realistic emotion. Dinah's gonna get stronger as time goes. I too noticed the Gabby reference and I can only think she's gonna be something eventually later on in the show, maybe in later seasons (if it gets picked up again). Dinah's none grieving may have been the fact she's been grieving for 10 years and you can only grieve for so long, ya know?
The Jesse/Hawke thing surprised me for a second but then I realized it was kinda planned in the way that it causes Jesse internal conflict, thus fleshing out the character more.
Overall, a good episode and it was good to see it based more on Dinah and Barbara's past. I missed the first couple of seconds so I didn't get to see Dinah all fighty and stuff.

I love this ep. I am telling, it just keeps getting better and better.:D I like the Canary cry, very cool. I like all the humor in this ep. Like when Dinah and Helena come back from fighting, and Helena's like, "and your mom's the black canary. :p Very funny. I also like how Dinah has her new power. :D Lori did a good job as the Canary too.;)
The only part I didn't like was that Hawke was Reese's father, that was so gay!:(

I argee with everyone who had said that this episode has been the best one thus far. This episode ROCKED!
And here are my reasons why....
1. Dinah getting combat lessons from Helena was great. Reminded me of Xena training Gaby. However I wasn't surprised about Dinah's new power. I kinda saw it coming. The whole mind power has been done many times before. However this new power allows Dinah to get some action in the crimefighting business.
2. I loved the part when all four women took turns asking questions out of confusion. I thought that was funny.
3. Lori L. was awesome as the Black Canary. I thought she had a cool power. That Sonic blast even knock Helena out! BTW: I don't think she's really dead. However I was disappointed that they didn't show a flashback of her in costume. I'm not fimiliar with the character so I'm not sure what her costume looks like. Although now I know that she didn't wear a cape.
4. I loved how Helena defended her mother when BC insulted her about being the "daughter of a thief." It would of been even better if there was a flashback between BC and Catwoman. What exactly didn't BC like about Catwoman? Was it because she was a thief or because she was never able to catch her? :D
5. Barbara didn't have a lot of action as always. However I thought she had a major role as mentor and by officially making Dinah part of the team by giving her the earpiece. I liked when Dinah looked at Barbara for help and Barbara stayed out of it either though her face expression was telling us that she really wanted to say something but couldn't.
6. I loved the way Helena flipped that guy! That was the most coolest part of the whole episode. It was nice to see Reese there giving Helena a hand. I thought the part when Helena gave Reese the ring was a nice touch.
7. The bad guy Al Hawke sucked. Although it was an interesting twist at the end when he ended up being Reese's father.
8. OMG: If Reese says "Tell me your name" to Helena ONE MORE TIME I'm going going to throw something at the T.V.!!!!! Let it go already.
BTW: Next Ep looks good. It's about time they showed some Catwoman in Helena!!!!!!!!

This ep rocked!! I hope that Black Canary is still alive. Her powers are amazing!! I can't believe that the Hawke guy is Reese's father!! OMG!! What a secret to carry around.
I have to say this was one kick ass episode! The best one yet! The cast did a fantastic job, as always.
I liked the conflict between Helena and Black Canary at the beginning. I so wanted to see Helena deck her after her dig about Helena being the daughter of a thief.
I have to agree with the others that have commented on the actual amount of screen time the show is getting. First we have to deal with the lame intro from Alfred (enough already!) and then commercial after commercial. PLUS last night I noticed that Dawson's Creek ran to 9:02 and yet BoP ended around 9:58 (according to my cable box time). Not cool. But despite that, "Sins Of The Mother" was a winner in my book. All of the Nielsen families out there who aren't tuning in to BoP can bite me. :D

The ep was great...a bit fast paced...but great nonetheless...
My comments...
1. They should really change the Alfred voiceover already...its eating up almost 2 minutes of the show...I think the reason why its still there is because of the line..,"My name is Alfred Pennyworth, and this is thier story..." Well they should atleast modify it like a preview of last week's ep or a preview of the current ep then say that line...
2. They should start ending the show other than the clocktower-viewing-the-skyline scenes...Even if the backdrop changes colors...it's still redudundant...They should end the show in other places...or maybe end it with other characters...Like what they did in ep 2 where the ending happened in Harley's Office...
3. Al Hawke...at a lost (totally esp with that zen thing) practically makes him out of place the entire episode, except in the end scene with Reese.
4. The stories are too fast that a lot of holes need to be figured out by the viewers after watching the show...39-40 mins was this episode...They should atleast make it around 45 mins every ep for a more fluid story...
Overall I would like to see this show last longer...If in case WB decides to axe this...I have a suggestion why not let BOP pull a Buffy or a Roswell and move somewhere else where it is more appreciated...I mean if they really expect to beat shows like the West Wing and The Bachelor...Maybe they should put Smallville on BOP's timeslot...(narrow-minded execs)
For those who don't like the show no one is forcing you so stop complaining and hoping that this show gets cancelled. I'm not being one sided here but this site and this messageboard is an appreciation of the BOP and if you don't like it...no one is forcing you to...

EXCELLENT! EXCELLENT!
So far the best episode!
This was a brilliant episode. About time Dinah actually got to do something (and for Rachel Skarsten to act for once!). That new power is pretty cool too, been far too little mention of her abilities since the 1st episode
I was slightly disappointed by the kinda sudden acceptance of her mother being dead. Would have been nicer for that loss to continue for a bit...maybe a trip to Dr Quinn... :)
Black Canary was cool :) Good acting there too. Definitely got a feel of a mother trying to do her best to find her daughter again. Little disappointing that she got captured so easily though, you'd have thought she would have fought a bit...
As for Helena and Oracle... nice seeing Oracle's "mother" side come out :) And Helena-Black Canary interaction was nice! Cat fight :)
Reese... ooh I hope the Dad-Hawk thing develops more. How will Helena react when she finds out?
Only moan... lack of Alfred! :(

I thought BCI was Dinah Drake Lance? And BC II Dinah Laurel Lance?

I knew about both Black Canarys from the DC Who's Who directory from the 80s, which I have every issue collected and is within easy reach in my closet for when I need to consult it, which is practically every other day. :D
