OK fellow boppers, I began to think last night while I was cataloging an arrested's tattoos. A friend of mine once said there are special meanings behind people's Tattoos? She Had a barn owl on her shoulder. She said it was because the barn owl, once it finds a mate is true to that mate forever; just like her. Well I began to wonder about this. What do the people of New Gotham have out there?
(Please let's keep it clean, There are youngins on the board, nothing off color. I don't need SGH travelling to NJ to Kill Me...)

I Will start since it's my thread.

On my right shoulder I have a little(4") cherub/Angel. I got this in rememberance of my wife and my first daughter, Bridget Jean. Unfortunately complications occurred and she died at birth. I wanted something to remember her by (Not that I ever would forget) So I got the Angel. I know it sounds wierd but I sometimes feel like she is looking over my shoulder. There are things that have happened at work that I have come out without a scrape that i say "Shit" That was lucky. And the fact my son was almost born with the same complication (which they said was one and a million that it happened to bridget) Doctor looked at me and said, "Something is telling me to get the baby today, he did and he is here. Thank God.

Do you have a personal meaning behind your tattoo or is it just body art which you will regret in a few years?

hmmm... isn't this an interesting thread?

well, i have a blue rosebud (opened) and it's about the size of my fist and i have it on my left shoulder blade area (upper back).

i got it for a few reasons-- all stemming from one person, really. he was my best friend in the whole wide world and also the one that showed me what real love and a good (romantic) relationship was supposed to be. one day he asked me what my favorite flower was, and i told him i had two: white rose, and blue violet, but that if such a thing existed it would be a blue rose (blue is my favorite color and i really like violets b/c they are so common and so underappreciated and i love the way roses smell-- and i also love their elegance and other things about them). so one day he surprised me with one dozen of blue roses! i didn't even know that they existed! so my favorite flower is officially the blue rose and i've wanted to get a tattoo of it forever! :) unfortunately, this friend of mine passed away before i got the tattoo and so it serves two purposes: as remembrance of him and all that he was to me, and also b/c the blue rose is my favorite flower. :)

there is another tattoo that i'm getting, but i don't know when, so i'll share that story when it's actually on my body.

I have two tattoos.

One on my right upper arm, is a chinese symbol for strength. I picked it because I'm the oldest in my house and I'm always protecting my family.

And the other one is on my lower back and is a phoenix. I picked it, because i was always fascinated with the story of that bird.

I have 1 tattoo .. its an Aztec tribal sun symbol on the back of my upper shoulders.

I designed it and chose it for several reasons ... the North, South, East and West beams are elongated to always point my way home ... the inner core is a sprial which represents eternity and the eternal goal for inner peace ... and finally I placed it on my upper back because of an Irish blessing that says "may your days always be filled with the fragrance of wildflowers and the sun always be at your back"

I will be getting two more soon ... I want a cressant moon on the small of my back and a shooting star on my left arm .. that way I will always have the Sun, Moon and Stars with me where ever I travel and when I go to get them I'm going to have the sprial filled in with rainbow colors to symbolize the struggle for world peace.

So to me tattos when done correctly and not just as a fad really is art and a form of self expression.

Okay, before I start I have to mention that I don't have any tatoos yet. I was set back three years ago when I started donating blood and if I get one I'll have to wait a year before I can donate again. I'm waiting til after I complete my second gallon then I'mm going for my first tatoo. I have four planned already. The first one is a simple KISS army logo and the second is a RAIDERS tatoo that I'm still working on. I don't want the basic shield so I've decided to use the Iron Maiden lettering and the face of their mascott Eddie as the theim. If you don't know who or what I'm talking about check out www.ironmaiden.com to see the basic idea. I'm also planning to get a Green Lantern shield on the middle finger on my right hand because that's where he has his ring and me being GL, well you get it. I also want to get the Watchers emblem on my left wrist like the characters from Highlander. Each one will obviously based on something I'm a fan of. The Watchers one is because I have all the movies and still watch the re runs even though I've seen them all at least ten times each. So I figure I watch enouph to be a watcher. The KISS army one is because I can't think of anything better to get to show my loyalty to KISS and I think KISS army is straight to the point. The RAIDERS one is something I've been working on for fifteen years and I want it to be different from all the others that I've seen wich were mostly just the shield. I can't e just like everyone else, I'm one of the guys you see on TV during the games with a costume. If you've seen something that looks like Eddie on TV during a RAIDERS game while you were flippeng through channels, it was probobly me. If so, yes that is my real hair. So to me each one does mean something to me, even though they're not on me yet.

Well, I also don't have any tattoos yet...HOWEVER, I will for sure be getting one. I am going to get a tattoo of a phoenix on my right arm, because I love the myth of the flaming bird, and because the whole "rising up out of the ashes" thing...I can in a way relate to that. :D I've always been interested in it for years and come on! Wouldn't that look cool??? Hee hee.....

I've always wanted a Bat-symbol tattoo. Batman consumes my life...it seems apparent that the legacy should comsume my body too.

I don't have a tattoo, but one day I might get one. I thought, well if I get a tattoo I want it to mean something so I once saw this tattoo on the History of the Tattoo and I loved it. One you turn your arm one way, it says Death, but if you turn it another way, it says Life. If I can find a picture of it I'll show you, I'd probably want to get it on my wrist.

I don't have a tattoo, and I don't know if I'll ever get one...but one of my schoolmates had a good idea. she wants a tattoo of a toe ring. that way, you could always have a toe ring, but not get it snagged on stuff

I am thinking of a tatoo that says determination because you can't give up if you have determination on your body perminatly. Or I was thinking of the mark of Zorro because he is my favorite legend in the whole world and I think it is because I have 3 seperate scars that line up into a perfect zorro Z. those are my reasons.

I have 6 tattoos and I basically designed them all... not drawing them myself, I can't draw worth $hit... but I came up with the pattern or found little pictures to suit my needs.

Tattoo 1: A red, 1984, lamborghini Countach on the back of my right shoulder. Why? Because it's a sexy car and I'll never be able to afford one.

Tattoo 2: Above my left ankle, I have a shark, killer whale and a dolphin linked with a pink triangle. The marine life are cartoonish and anyone who knows me knows my passion for marine animals. The triangle was a way to link them together plus it's fitting cuz I am gay.

Tattoo 3: On my right bicep of my cat Minou who died. He was my first baby and I missed him and now he's with me forever.

Tattoo 4: On my right wrist, where my thumb meets my wrist - that area, sort of on the side; I have a cartoonish one of a dolphin jumping in the waves with a palm tree on an island behind. Very basic design.

Tattoo 5: I designed one that my ex and I got together. It's a heart with a saturn ring around it with 3 stars around it.

Tattoo 6: Right beside the other tattoo on my wrist is a bigger dolphin with waves around him.

NO MORE!!! I've had enough!

Yes Frostbite, there is a thread for this but it's talking about Helena's tattoos and discussing the pain of getting a tattoo. We never discussed what ours mean to us.

Speaking of which, why do you have a smilie on your ass?

GL2814
07-18-2003, 07:59 AM
It's very hard to resist answering that question on behalf of Frostbite. Anyway, I was watching the show Jackass one night and saw a tatoo that I'd like to get. I don't beleve in getting anything that involves the person you're dating or married to because you never know what will happen. I like this tatoo because it's the best compromize. Simply put it's the words "your name". Steve O had it tatooed on his ass and I want to do the same thing. I also like the fact that I could tell anybody I meet that I have "your name" tatooed on my ass. I was also thinking of getting one that says "Aythorized personel only". I'd just hate to sit down right after even though I plan on being really drunk when I get those two.

I don't have any tatoo's since I'm still too young to get one but if I did I would love to get a dragonon my back because it is a myth (I'm on summer vacation so I forgot weather it was a Chinese or a Japanese myth), that the Dragon was placed on the clothing of an emperor because the dragon is supposed to protect the emperor, and one niht I had a dream that I was in deep trouble and I was saved by a Dragon. I would also love to get a batman symbol on my arm because I always loved Batman.

My tattoos are meaningful body art. My first tattoo I received on my left shoulder blade when I was 16. It is of a sun and I got it because not only is my zodiac sign ruled by the sun, but the sun symbolizes my day mood. My second tattoo ties in with the sun and is on my right shoulder blade. It is of a crescent moon, where the tips almost meet each other, encompassing four stars. The moon symbolizes my night personality and the four stars symbolize the people in my life that mean so much to me. My third tattoo I received during a severe bout of depression. I got the theatre faces - comedy and tragedy - on my lower back. The tattoo artist drew a scetch and then did the art free hand while he tattooed me. It is by far my favorite tattoo and it not only symbolizes that you cannot have happiness without sadness and vice versa, but it serves as a reminder to never get that far gone again. My fourth tattoo has been the hardest to take care of and the one holding me back from getting another. It is a shadow of a lizard on my right wrist. The lizard symbolizes a renewal or transformation. I had finally overcome my hardest obstacles and the battle to live had won. This serves as a reminder that not only can people change, but that I have changed... I'm alive and happy about it! :D

I have one tattoo and it took me forever to muster up the courage to get it done.

It's a very simple design on my left ankle. It's a treble clef (music note). Although simple it does hold a lot of meaning. I adore music (listening and performing.) I believe that music may have gotten me through high school.

The most fun aspect of my tattoo is that I guess I don't look like the tatoo type...so people are always surprised that I have one...I feel like a rebel! :)

It's not a smilie, it's a sad face. Sort of like :( but without the eyebrows. I got it about a year ago. It seemed everyone had a tatoo and I was the only one without one. So, I thought to myself, "I guess I'll just get a tatoo as well." And because I'm a pessimist, I thought I'd get a frowny face. And I chose the ass because there aren't any bones in the ass; it's all fat, and I thought it would hurt the least. It still hurt like hell, though.

hmmm, well, since people have shared their future tattoos, i guess i'll share mine, too:

my best male friend (who is an absolutely amazing artist and just graduated from the university of the arts here in philly) is in the process of designing my (second?) tattoo for me: it's going to be a lioness cuddled with her cub-- they may or may not be on grass and such. i haven't decided how much detail i want in it, but after i see what he has, i'll figure it out.

anyways, the reasons that i'm getting this tattoo (which will be about 2-3 times bigger than the one i have, and i keep changing where on my back i want the thing) are that i'm a very proud leo. :D and the lion is the king of the jungle and the lionness is the queen-- and we all know that it's the woman in the relationship that really runs shit. :D and i've been wanting some sort of lion-type tattoo for years already.

the reasons i wanted to get a lionness are because i'm a woman (lionness is a female lion, for those who don't know), and i'm very protective of my loved ones (hence why she's cuddled with her cub). also, the reason i have her cuddled with her cub is because it is a peaceful scene. i am a peaceful, calm person in general (although i do get stressed out somewhat easily as of late-- bad nerves: they run in the family), and to me that is very positive (i try to put out as much positive energy as possible).

the sucky thing is that whenever i tell a tattoo artist that i want a lion tattoo, they automatically think of something brutal and violent (with blood dripping from the teeth, or a battle scene, etc-- triflin'!), so i decided to get a more peaceful-minded person (my friend) to design it, and all the tattooer has to do is transfer the design to my back and stitch the ink in.

but i digress...
yes, so i'm getting a lionness cuddled with her cub b/c it is representative of: my proud (and rather alarmingly typical) leo nature, my inner peacefullness, my protective nature for those i love (and in general, for those who are not very capable of protecting themselves), my dominant nature (yay for the lions!), and my very womanly nature (cuz it's a female lion). :)

my (third?) tattoo keeps changing... i used to want to get a phoenix cuz i really liked the story, but it seems like everybody and their third cousin is gettin' one, and i'm sooo not the type to follow the fad... and i can't find a phoenix rendition that i would want to have on my body anyways (i like things to look realistic-- not cartoony). LOL-- i'm seriously thinking about getting a different tattoo right now, though... but i'm not sharin' cuz somebody might steal my idea before i get to it. ;) :p but the way things are with money, and time, etc (i'm a poor college student, and my friend has been working on this tatt design for three months and hasn't finished yet, which alarms me as to actually how much detail he has put into it), i'll probably get the one i'm not sharing (cuz it's gunna be smaller, and much easier to do) before the lionness-cub one.... but we shall see... :)

Well as long as some of you are sharing what you want to get. I can't decide what i want my next tat to be.
I may get two more angels and put them on my lower back just above the belt line. ( the lower two for my two angels who are here with me. so it will look like 1 angel up and two down)

I was also thinking of the Pittsburgh Steelers symbol. i am a die hard steeler fan and would put it on my right outer thigh.

My last choice is Captain America, another of my nick names. not to sure about this one...Maybe get the crescent moon for DocMidnite.

This one isn't real but, right now I'm sporting the tatoo seen on Ralf Fines' back in Red Dragon. I got the temporary version just to see how long it would take to do it and I'm suposed to meet someone tomorrow and I don't feel like making a good impresion. I figured the dragon on my back and the way I look in general should scare of any christion conservative who beleves KISS stand for Kids (or Knights) In Satans' Sevice. Bised, I have better things to do than meet people my friends want me to go out with. I might even be getting the GL finger tatoo tomorrow just to show I mean business.

That's a cool design. btw Incase anybody wondered, the back tatoo took three hours. It would have been longer had it been real but, I don't think I want to go through that kind of pain. Anyone with a tatoo on there back or backside could understand. This thing goes from my neck to the back of my knees. I don't think I be able to sit down after something like that being added permanently.

I really believe in tatoos but they have to have meaning I don't like those piercing things that I keep seeing in young girls (much of pain not much of brain).
Tatoos are made as a ritual or an act of love and sometimes as a power mark.
I have one in a whrist with a I really don't know how to say... it's for the ones who know a protection mark called the Saturn (God of the time space and beginings) mark. It's a circle with an "h" in greek and writings all around. I have seen many people with tatoos and or piercings just because it was "cool" and I really think that is foolishness, these things must be very well thought and made with a clear mind no doubts and no regrets or it will hurt like hell if you have any doubt.
To whoever is thinking in doing one think very well what where and specially why to do it. Best regards the_watcher

I've just come back from town, and i went into a tatoo palour just to find out how much my tatoo would cost.

I actually expected more, but it's not that much, thinking of getting it first sat in september.

But the funny thing is, when the artist asked me what the meaning between the 2 were, i told him about BOP and he went ape shit. Apparently he's a HUGE fan of BOP, so i'm definately going there! Hopefully we'll be chatting too much of BOP so i wont feel the pain

I think a lot of tattoos are kinda dumb. I mean, they may look cool on you now, but think if you were a parent, grandparent, or really old or something. Or trying to get a prestigious job. Would you really want them on then? Especially people who just cover their bodies with them. If you really feel the need to decorate your body, go Henna or something. Often itīs just not worth it.

Since my partner-in-crime started this, I guess I should but my two cents in. I have three tats: On my right shoulder, I have a DC-original. It is a crow but in a circular style. Those who have seen the Bat-Signal can kinda guess what it looks like. Doc and SGH have seen it. The other two are on my left arm. On the shoulder is a Wiccan pentacle (one point up) with Thiebian script around it. Just underneathe it is a band with "DrayvensCrow" in the same script. The words around the pentacle are private for me, sorry!

Sometimes, perfection isn't in the way it was originally supposed to look. My tribal crow has a marbled look to it and I've had many complements on it. It wasn't supposed to be marbled, but sometimes perfection is in the imperfections.

The wrist? Ouch! Watch out - those ones hurt like hell. I've got one on my wrist and I'll admit that it was one that got so painful at one point, tears formed in my eyes.

Yea I know,I heard that if its closer/over a bone (like the wrist)it'll hurt like a bitch...But oh well,I figure if I can go thru the pain of peircing and gaging my ears and the other peircings I've gotten/getting,than I can get a tattoo...

And yes,I have a countdown..Cuz I have no life...

Piercings aren't as painful because the pain is over quick. One shot and it's over. With a tattoo, you have to sit there while the pain is inflicted slowly. As for the wrist, the most painful spot isn't actually over the bone - what's unique about tattoos in that area is all your nerve endings are in your hands so that is what actually hurts. And the inner side of your wrist hurts a lot because all the veins are close to the surface. Ouch! I'm cringing just remembering the pain I went through.

I've attached a photo of my tattoo - sorry it's so blurry. Kind of hard to take it myself.

That is a really cool tattoo, SGH! Ok, to explain about the the pic of the tattoo I want. (http://youngwizards.net/eve/ubb.x?a...8931#4771048931) That is my name and another name really meaningful to me in shorthand, like the kind secretaries used to use. The long one is the meaningful name (it's a long story, but basically is Radiazulon) and the shorter one crossing it is my name. I would want to get it that thick, too. The place I would get it is on the smooth part inside on my arm between the wrist and elbow.

I uploaded a smaller version on the post above. The other looked too big on screen - this one looks better. Still blurry though.

Ouch..Oh well,I can deal with it...Just get drunk off my ass after!...Or something...The one on my wrists is the first one I am getting...I need to get a job,I gotta pay alot of money for all this...The ting that amuses me is that everyone single tattoo I am getting has some meaning...And I keep chaning my mind on some...

If you keep changing your mind, then don't get the tattoo and wait until you are sure. It really sucks to regret a tattoo.

Its not chaning my mind, its just thinking of a new one..Like just now,I am getting a star somewhere else..Not on my other wrist, cuz it has to be hidden...I am gonna sooo get caught...

Speaking of which.....The newest tat for me will be the left eye of Ra. Getting it mon. on the back of my neck. That oughta be fun!

I have a little frowny face on my right butt cheek.

This was a lie.

Though if I ever were to get one, this would be it.

Friday night I finally got my tattoo. The placement and size is slightly different, but it's the same design I posted before.

So far, most people who have seen it think it is Arabic or Elvish. It's actually shorthand, and I know I got it right because my younger sister can actually read it (and I didn't tell her what it was beforehand. She'd studied shorthand for fun a few years back.) The L shape is Radiazulon (long version of my main screen name, and there's more explanation behind that, but this isn't the place for it) and the part crossing it is Rachel (my name). The first pic is to show placement (left wrist) and the second pic is from my perspective. One thing I find interesting is my friend's take on the meaning.

friend: The way I saw it seemed like it was expressing equality. lol
me: ?
friend: Well, there were the crossing pieces, and that little sign that looked like an equals sign.
me: I never thought of it that way ^^
friend: intertwined and equal. lol

So that's something to think about. It's makes a hell of a lot of sense, heh.

Anyway, on the down side, mom's pissed about it. She kicked me out of her house and said I can't come back unless I have it removed. I live on-campus at my school so it's not SUCH a huge deal, but it still sucks. I needed to move out anyway, I was just hoping it wouldn't be so soon or sudden, but whatever. I really love the tat and not getting it removed anytime soon.

*pushes the cobwebs out of the way as she meanders into the thread*

I had meant to post sooner, but procrastination seems to be an increasing specialty of mine. Red and I both decided to immortalize our obsession with Birds of Prey whilst wandering around Vegas this spring. Here's mine (ankle-ish):

I've plans to elaborate on the design down the road. This was definitely the start of a bad habit.

Wow I haven't seen this thread in 3 years! First of all: Dark, that is awesome! Can't wait to see what you'll do with it.

As for me, though, I only enjoyed my tattoo for two years and about 10 days. (March 23, 2007 - April 6, 2009) My whole life changed that afternoon and shortly after I started regretting the tattoo. Since then I've considered changing it (not a full cover-up, but something over top) or having it removed. I don't have the money or time for it and not entirely sure if it would be better to change the meaning or just get rid of it. It doesn't bother me so much anymore anyway, so for now it's just THERE as a reminder of how different I used to be.

To forget your past is to forget yourself. It's part of you. If it reminds you of good times, then look at it fondly. If it reminds you of a time you'd rather forget? Then look at it as a reminder of how far you have come and where you never want to return. :thumb:

Oh and by the way...Welcome Back Rach!

OK everyone I hit Vegas again the beginning of this week and my sis was BEGGING me to hit the tat parlor as she has never been in one or seen the whole process done. Since I already had a design in mind we went and the artist nailed my concept and I got my second one done. Here are a couple of pics that shows the BoP symbol that I got when Dark and I visited Sin City earlier this year along with my new one.

The new one represents my being inducted as a full member into the Iron Maiden Household, which is a part of the SCA (you can google that...and yes I am a geek lol). As a nod to my bartending duties my title in the Iron Maiden is 'Alchemist'. The crossed cannons is the Iron Maiden's SCA Device (crest). The symbols above and below it are alchemy symbols- the top one standing for Alcohol and the bottom is for Aqua Vitae meaning the Spirit of Wine.
