Hi, everyone! I'm new to the whole comic book thing. Anyway, I realize that Gotham is a fictional city, but I'm curious to know where it is supposed to be situated in the U.S. and if it is near any major cities that exist.

Southern New Jersey, a little south of Atlantic City.

Yup, but you know what bothers me. Smallville, that is in the comics it's a good plane ride from matropolis, but in SMALLVILLE is like a 15 min drive.

In Smallville, both Metropolis and Bludhaven are in Kansas. And if Bludhaven is in Kansas, that means Gotham is as well.

Bludhaven and Gotham in Kansas .. gee once again TV screws up comics contiunty !!

And Edge City is in Smallville, too, which is the home of The Mask, and he's not even a DC character!

Overlaping companies can get away with that ... after all I'm sure Smallville KS isn't the only Smallville in the US.
But when a DC show property screws around with a DC comics property ... thats just really poor research.

Just to clear up any confusion, by "in Smallville" I don't mean "within Smallville", I mean "shown on the Smallville TV show".

We're discussing cities in Comicbooks ... conversations start off as something and branch out into more ... don't be SO literal .. its still on topic.

Here's something odd about the AotDCU: They place Star City in California and Elmond in Virginia, yet Hawk and Dove (who are from Elmond) were in Titans West, and Speedy (who's from Star City) was in the regular Titans!

I always thought Gotham being a different name for New York, was where Gotham City is. For example, visit www.gothamcity.com

In the 1930s, Batman's adventures took place in New York City, and was sometimes called Gotham because, as you said, it's a nickname for New York. But slowly, New York and Gotham City became two different cities. And, since New York City exists in the DCU, it can't also be the place where Gotham sits. Understand?

California. And I thought it was turned into a park, not a parking lot.

As recently as that piece of :curse: movie Batman and Robin, they show Gotham as New York. It's the part where Bruce and the scientists explain the satellites. You'll see Gotham on a monitor in what is usually called New York.

Derek .. don't take anything that happes in the movies as gospel to the books .. the movies were SO screwed up it was pitiful !!
Personally I've always thought that both Metropolis and Gotham were based on NY. But really neither of them are .. John Byrne put it best ... he was interviewed just as his tenure on WW began .. he was asked why he moved WW from factual Boston to fictional Gateway City ... he expalined that you have alot more freedoms with fictional places than you do with factual ones ... for example ... if you intend to keep everything factual you couldn't do things like destroy landmarks or kill people in either accidents or explosions or things of this nature, in fictional cities your not bound by these rules.

What are you talking about? Mount Rushmore, Stonehenge, and the Washington Monument were all destroyed.

Jesse321- I do not take the last 2 movies seriously. Also, I was just pointing where it is in the movies.
Lady Ribena- How could you like that movie. It was horrible. At least for me anyways.

Derek .. I didn't take any of those movies seriously.
FB ... I'm specifically talking about John Byrne .. not everyone ... he plays by the old rules.

yes, you see i watched batman and robin when i was like 10 years old, or somthing i loved batman and robin as a child as i loved watching catwoman, i didnt like batman forever as there was no kick ass female lead, and as a lil girl i wanted to see that
also when i was little i didnt no what cheesy diolgue and stuff was and i loved uma thurman as poison ivy i still do.
i think batman and robin is a great kids movie i should no went to see it twice in the cinema, and being one of my fav films as a child i cant help but still love it, and anyway its way better than batman forever
sorry to go off topic

BC ... just because you happen to disagree with something is no reason to degrade someone else's opinion by calling them "pissy ass" ... thats just rude.
I happen to have HATED the third and forth Batman installments ... I walked out of the third and would have walked out of the forth but I went with several others and had to sit through it since I was the one driving ... but I can assure you that my reasons for hating both were anything but "pissy ass" ... most people even those who never read the books hated 3 & 4 ... but I HATED both simply because they both ROYALLY sucked !!
The villains were childish, the dialogue was pitiful, the plotlines (what little there was of them) were pathetic ... and George Clooney who can't act his way out of a paper bag as Batman was absolutely laughable !!
I hate to admit this, but I got the collection of all 4 movies on DVD as a Birthday gift and I actually gave 3 & 4 away.
