I bought my first two Birds of Prey comics!

I bought the August and September issues. This was my first visit to a comic shop in about 7 or 8 years. I expected it to be the one from the Simpsons. Ya know, some 40 year old nerd sitting behind a counter talking about the latest pocket protectors. Well, it was different than that.

After I took my first steps in, I was SHOCKED at how many different Batman and Batman related comics there were!
I was immediately scared. What is BOP had different subtitles like Batman? I frantically searched. Then I set my eyes on Huntress smashing through a window. The (SEP) cover touted the Return of the Huntress. I fanned through the issues they had and decided on Getting the August because on top of the title it says Bold New Direction, and I also needed the September to get familiar.

Overall, I enjoyed them. I plan on getting more issues, and in all honesty, a subscription. I miss Alfred not being in the Clocktower, but that's ok. If someone doesn't mind, could a few questions be answered.

1.So Dinah Lance in the comic books, is Black Canary, so does that mean there wasn't a Carolyn as shown on the show?

2. Batman's still in Gotham, right? Also, it's not New Gotham?

3. So what's Babs pissed off at Huntress for?

4. No Reese or Wade?
(Huntress does rescue a black baby named Reese)

5. How is the Hawke family in the comics?
(Dinah makes a referance in the Aug issue)

6. So Helena isn't the child of Batman and Catwoman?
(In one comic, Dinah mentions she doesn't have the Bat-Gene, and Barbara mentions something about Helena does.)

Also, any other info would be great. Thanks!

Remember, the BOP comic is very different from the TV show, read here in book discussions threads, there are some ones where Jesse explains well the differences between them.

OH GOD HERE WE GO AGAIN !!!

Okay ... ONCE AND FOR ALL !!!! THE BOOKS AND THE TV SHOW ARE TWO TOTALLY DIFFERENT THINGS !!! (Except maybe in Frostbites twisted little mind .. no offense FB)

1.So Dinah Lance in the comic books, is Black Canary, so does that mean there wasn't a Carolyn as shown on the show?

There is no Carolyn Lance .. that was only an invention of the show ... in the comics there was Dinah Lance and Dinah Loral Lance.

2. Batman's still in Gotham, right? Also, it's not New Gotham?

Yes Batman never left Gotham ... and no there is no New gotham ... althought technically after the Earthquake that destroyed Gotham in Cataclysm this could be considered new Gotham sort of.

3. So what's Babs pissed off at Huntress for?

Oracle and Huntress don't get along in the books they never did .. partially becuase the Huntress i the show isn't the same as the Huntress in the comics.

4. No Reese or Wade?
(Huntress does rescue a black baby named Reese)

No to both ... I think that the "Reese Baby" and even the fact that he was black was an homage to the show.

5. How is the Hawke family in the comics?
(Dinah makes a referance in the Aug issue)

Not sure on this one ... I think that thats coming up.

6. So Helena isn't the child of Batman and Catwoman?
(In one comic, Dinah mentions she doesn't have the Bat-Gene, and Barbara mentions something about Helena does.)

In what comic cause I've never seen anything like that .. I think your talking about BOP Secret Files in which BC says she isn't a member of the Bat Gang.

And no Helena isn't the child of BM and CW.

Also have to point out 'cry for blood' explains Helena's background pretty well. At least it did for me!

As for getting a subscription some basic information I found out. A 'Birds of Prey' subscription costs $21 for 12 issues. They did not say anything about S&H. See http://dccomics.com/about/subscriptions.html for a little more info.

They did however tell me this:If you ordered now (July) you would start with the november issue arriving late
september. Hope that helps!

Barbara doesn't like Huntress because Huntress in the comic books, doesn't really mind if she actually kills someone in the process of saving someone. Oracle just doesn't respect her morals as a vigilante, and vice versa.

Yeah Impulse is rihgt I have a comic book of BOP and its true..Batman doesn't like Huntress' morales anymoe than Babs does. BC did work with her in the Girl Crazy comic.

Are you sure she's not making a reference to Connor Hawke (Green Arrow's son) ?

Thats bullshit !! Huntress has NEVER killed anyone ... thats been discussed before .. the conflict between Huntress and the Bat family stems from the argument that Huntress believes the ends justify the means and she doesn't mind using a bit more force than is nessecary ... BUT always just short of lethal ... and frankly Batman and the rest of Bat clan are ALL HYPOCRITES (with the possible exception of Bab's and Tim) taking into consideration how often they have ALL put people through walls Bats himself expecially !!

Bats whole shtick is scaring the crap out of criminals ... of forcing information out them by any means nessesary .. how is that any different from what Huntress does ?

WHOAH!!! Didn't mean to piss you off there. I'm just referring to the Book No Man's Land (not the graphic novel, but the book BASED on the graphic novel) and Batman and Huntress were having a conversation:

"You kill," the Batman had hissed.

She'd surprised herself by finding her voice. "Yes."

"Not in my city."

"Is that why you don't like me? That when a four time loser with murder on his mind pulls a gun on me, I'm not afraid to drop him? Is that it?"

His jaw clenched further. It was like ice when he spoke. "Yes."

That's what I am basing my information on, she had probably not said that in the graphic novel, No Man's Land. But DC Comics had approved the novel.

I never read the novel .. but I can tell you ... I have EVERY SINGLE appearence of the Huntress ... both PRE and POST crisis ... and not once has she ever killed anyone ... think about it ... if she had Batman himself would have taken her down for it !

Huntress just advocates that sometimes using lethal force is an acceptable alternative ... and think about it .. how many people would have been saved if the Joker had been killed ages ago .. Barbara, James Gordon's second wife, Jason Todd just to name a few.

Maybe she just kills people behind the scenes. I mean, just because we don't see Alfred bathing in every issue are we to assume he's unclean?

That is the most IDIOTIC and ASSNINE use of logic I've ever seen .. you compair taking a life to taking a bath ?? don't become a lawyer please !!

If she killed ANYONE behind the scenes or in front do you think it would make a difference to Bats ?? No matter who she killed he would take her down in a heart beat murder is murder in his eyes ... the victim is irrelevant !! Hell Bats won't even kill the Joker who SO RICHLY deserves to be axed !!
