I know that the show gave us a rather brief explanation as to why the Metahumans existed but I could really do for some more information.
And I would really love to see much less of the this idea and more of the human development and traditional action, that the comics are known for but then again Huntress style of fighting is by fair the most unique a TV series has ever had.
We need more Detective stories as well. Once more I draw from the Batman comics, Babs is probably one of the best detectives Gotham presently has at the moment and she could really help the team solve a murder or something like the PILOT episode but each of the women have their own strengths.
Babs is the brains, Helena the fighter and footwork, and well Dinah is undecided at the moment. I guess only time will tell on who and what she will become. (Yes I know down the line she will become Black Canary but what part will she play on the team?)

I think they're just doing this in the beginning parts of the season, much like Smallville's "freak-of-the-week" during the early parts of their first season.

I never liked the whole Freak of the Week idea.

I didn't like the freak of the week deal either. And yeah I would like to know exactly where these metas are coming from. In Smallville there was a plausible (not so much beliveable) but still plausible explanation as to where the freaks were coming from.

I don't mind the meta of the week thing. Just don't over done it like smallville did during its first season. The metas of Birds of Prey are just other part of how Gotham had always been since Batman had watched over the city.

Like I mentioned above, that's really not enough of an explanation and frankly, the Freak of the week scernaio got old real quick on SMALLVILLE, not that I didn't like a few of them but the BATMAN myths have so much to draw from and the writers just seem to be slacking off and using the easy way out. "Oh, let's do another meta." That's the way, it felt on SMALLVILLE up until we started to see Clark actually fighting the Freaks...then only then did it begin to tame down.
Now, being a fan of both shows and both myths, I've gone through my share of SUPERMAN shows (Superboy, Superman cartoons, Lois and ClARK) and BATMAN shows ('60s BATMAN, THE MOVIES, the Animated Series, etc.) I can partially understand the writers slacking off but give us something more challenging to test the cast relationships and give them something to solve more Batman-like or at least bring in a classic villian, who is really ticked or has been in waiting for years and jsut decides to come out and find anyone, that will challenge him/her. Helena would take that chance, without thinking about it.

The one thing I don't understand, is that Meta's never existed in the comics - Well... Ok, so I can't speak for every DC comic realised, but, the so called Meta's in the JLA weren't exactly very meta-ish. Other than The Flash. Batman, human, Kal-El, Kryptonian - Earth's Atmosphere seemingly "giving" him his powers. Wonder Woman, Amozonian. The Lantern, human, with a ring that draws it's powers from his imagination. J'onn jonnz, a martian. and Aqua Man's just a merman. Oh and then there's Plastic Man... well, I don't know what he is :P But essentially they aren't Meta's, there's nothing meta about them, it's just what "we" termed them, for want of a better explanation.

Thought metas did exist in the comics. Wasn't the Black Canary a meta??

I....don't know... I never encountered her, and the only thing it said in my Big batman book was that she was one of Oracle's operatives in the field during NML collecting data and information for her.

so why do people complain about metas being in this show? They were in the comics too.

They always think DC is copying from Marvel's "mutants" that's all. They didn't really realize that DC just prefers calling their mutans..."Metas". And like what frostbite said Metas have been in the DC Universe almost the same time as mutants were in marvel, it just wasn't given a big deal b4. Only now 'coz I think DC is running out of ideas in creating new heroes which is why we see a lot more meta-heroes like almost the entire teen titans...

Wow that's an interesting point considerng alot of the people I talk to say BoP is copying shows like Mutant X and the like. I'll be sure to look into that.
