Ooooooooooooooooooooo! It’s Ian’s birthday! I mustn’t forget to send him a gift!

(Racing to the closet, Sam yanks open the door.)

Ow! Hey! Ow! (An enormous amount of miscellaneous items tumble out with a loud clatter.)

I’ve got to get around to cleaning that out sometime. (Sam begins to rummage through the junk jumble.) Hmmm...I knew I had something in here that would be perfect. Let’s see...

(A fuzzy rabbit-ear slipper flies over Sam’s shoulder, followed by a bookbag with a broken zipper, three shelves, several socks, a dented teakettle, a hammer, and several science fiction books.)

Oooo! Here’s my umbrella! How come I always find it when it’s sunny? And here’s that sweater I borrowed from my sister. Well...what she doesn’t know won’t hurt me. And...well, look at that! It’s that care package I was supposed to send SGH up in Canada. Dang! Sorta forgot to do that. Hey...I wonder if that pair of shorts I lost during the move is in here. (Sam begins to root around busily.) Wait...what was I looking for? Oh, yeah...Ian. Hmmm. Let’s see...Oooooooooo! This’ll do just perfect!

(Sam emerges from the closet a bit dusty, but with an enormous grin. In her arms is a large box, which she sets carefully on the table.) Okay...gotta get this baby sent off. Where’s the packing tape?

(Sam races to the everything drawer and yanks it open a bit harder than she intended. The drawer flies out and crashes to the floor, spilling its contents everywhere. Sam surveys the mess.)

Oh, there’s the tape! Good! (Snatching the cheap, plastic dispenser from the floor, Sam races back to the box and pulls out a long strip of tape. As she tries to stick the tape to the box, it twists and sticks to itself. As Sam tries to unstick it, the other end of the tape twists and does the same thing. Sam begins to lose her temper, as the tape begins to stick to her fingers. Soon, it is a big, sticky snarl.)

Damn it! (Sam pulls the snarl off her left hand. Then, she pulls the snarl off her right hand. Then, she pulls the snarl off her left hand. Finally, she shakes her right hand as hard as she can, until the sticky ball of tape flies into the air and lands on her head. Scowling and swearing, Sam works the tape out of her hair. She pulls the snarl off her left hand. Then, she pulls it off her right hand. Finally, she sticks the tape under one of the flaps of the box and pulls her fingers free.)

There! About time! Stupid tape!

(Sam once again picks up the tape dispenser, but now, she can’t find the end. Turning it around and around in her hands, she squints at it, scratching with her nails to try to find an uneven place.)

Dang! Where is it? It can’t be this hard to find!

(Finally, Sam’s nails catch on a little bump.) Oooooooooo! I found it! (Sam picks at the edge until a little piece of tape comes up. She tugs at it carefully.)

Aha! Excellent! C’mon, tape...don’t split on me...c’mon...c’mon....DAMN!!!! (The tape splits and a narrow strip begins to peel off the roll. Sam frantically scratches at the other corner of the tape, hoping she can get it to catch up with the little, strippy piece.)

C’mon, stupidass tape, c’mon...there we go...that’s the way...c’mon...Aha! Here we go! Easy does it...DAMN!!!!

(The tape splits a second time. Now, Sam has two narrow strips of tape, with a strip in between that won’t come up. Quickly, she starts scratching at the piece in the middle. After several tense moments, that also comes up. Now, Sam has three strips of tape coming off the roll. The further she pulls it, the longer each strip becomes, without joining up with any of the other pieces. Tongue clenched between her teeth, Sam painstakingly works two of the strips off the roll until they are exactly even, and then tugs carefully at the tape until the pieces join and the strip disappears. Now, she does the same with the other strip. Half an hour later, the tape is whole once again. Carefully, Sam cuts the wadded, sticky snarl of tape strips from the end of the roll. She pulls it from her left hand. She pulls it from her right hand. Finally, she sticks it under a flap on the box and pulls her fingers free.)

Finally! It’s about time! Okay, I’ve gotta get this box ready...where’s the ta...

(As Sam looks at the tape, she realizes that the end of the tape has stuck itself back to the roll.)

(SamIAm carefully threads the end of the packing tape through the tape-holders on the dispenser.)

Okay...we’re all set, now. Gotta get going with this box.

(Sam sticks the tape to the side of the box with ease. When she gets to the top of the box, however, the flaps won’t stay in position for her to tape them down. They keep springing up and apart. Sam tries to use her elbow to hold down the flap on one side, while she uses her free hand to hold down the other. It is nearly impossible to use the tape in this position. Finally, Sam climbs onto the table and semi-straddles the box, using her right knee to hold one side and her left hand to hold the other. This works, until she gets to the middle of the box and finds herself in the way of where she needs to put the tape. Trying to maneuver herself out of the way while still holding the flaps in position with her left hand, Sam forgets about the edge of the table. Box, Sam, and tape tumble onto the floor.)

Ow. I think I sprained my hiney.

(Luckily, the tape is still stuck to the box, but the rest of it is all covered with dust bunnies and won’t stick, so, once again, Sam has to cut it off and start over. This time, it works, and Sam is able to tape the top of the box. Once she has done that, she winds the tape around and around the box in all directions, until it is completely covered with tape.)
There! That’s not coming apart in the mail! (Quickly slapping a label on the package and covering it with stamps, Sam catches the mail carrier and hands off the package. Feeling enormously pleased with herself, she heads back inside. As she relaxes in front of the TV, a thought occurs to her, making her jump up from the couch.)

Holy Catfish! :scared: I forgot to put a gift in!

(Sam thinks hard for a moment.) :idea:

Hey, Ian, remember when you were little, and you had more fun playing with the box than with what came inside? Well...er...I got you a box to play with! Enjoy it!

Hey Gang - Thank you for all your kind words, thoughts and wishes on my 'day'. It was amazing how many people remembered on the home front with cards, prezzies, e-mails from around the world. I was overwhelmed. I truly am not a person who likes a fuss over anything, but yesterday I just let everything flow over me and I must say it was a grand feeling.
