I'm Giving Up TV

With all due respect for Ashley, Joey Tribbiani is no replacement for Huntress, IMO.

I'm a BOP fan ... and yet, I cannot admit it publicly (at least, outside of a BOP forum) without being ridiculed. It hurts me to no end to have to listen to people questioning my sanity.

Everyone asks me what I see in BOP. I'm wondering ... what could anyone see in "The Bachelor" (or "The Real World", for that matter?) What drives someone to engross themselves in the lives of complete and utter strangers? (And not particularly entertaining ones, at that.)

Maybe that's why I like BOP: it was ENTERTAINING. It was the first show since Xena to appeal to me.

I'm swearing off network TV. I might catch Animal Planet or The Food Network (at least THEIR shows aren't going anywhere.)

jaguarin 04-29-2004 11:42 AM

Mmm, sorry im lost, what did you read?

The Godfather 04-29-2004 12:04 PM

Not all network television is bad.

And actually you'd be shocked how many people are receptive to the BOP fandom and thought the show got shafted.

Last year at ComiCon I got into a pretty huge discussion with several people that just seemed to grow and grow. I am active in the BUFFY/ANGEL fandom and people there are receptive as well as in the Star Trek one. Sure there are "mockers" but you'll find that everywhere..

In most cases I find a lot of "promise but the network failed the show"...

I too am a genre fan for the most part. A thrice screwed over one. Earth 2. Space Above and Beyond. BoP. I'm CERTAIN there are others.

But there are other good shows on TV. I tend towards a lot of the cop dramas like Third Watch and SVU. I watch a few comedies and I'll likely tune into JOEY for AS.

In any case, the next show I'm really looking forward to is Battlestar Galactica. Hopefully that one willbe given the time it deserves.

Everything moves in ebbs and tides. While network TV right now is devoid of good genre TV....it will come again. It will.

Uh. Enough rambling for me I guess.

Sxygrrl Huntress 04-29-2004 12:17 PM

Who cares if someone doesn't agree with your liking BOP??? If you like something, you should be proud of it and not hide it like it's some dirty, little secret. If they don't like what you like, tough.

As for Ashley, she is not replacing Huntress with her character on Joey. She's an actress and is happily working and I support any show she's on because I am a huge Ashley fan. If she wasn't Huntress on BOP, I probably wouldn't have liked the character as much. SHE is the biggest reason why I checked out BOP to begin with and I'm looking forward to seeing her in her new show.

I think if you can't stand up and tell people what you like to watch on tv, if their disagreeing bothers you, the root of the problem goes much deeper than tv. Be proud of what you like and if they don't like the same things, so be it. Don't let ridicule get to you, you are over 30, and don't have to justify yourself to them.

I'm NOT giving up tv, I'll be supporting Ashley in Joey and when Joey isn't on, I'll be tuning in to The Bachelor, Survivor and all those other reality shows I love, plus all those scripted dramas that I am addicted to. I would never give up tv or be ashamed of what I like to watch because of some idiots on other forums disagreeing with me in a childish manner. Who cares what they think?

That's why I said, "with all due respect."

Shows like "The Bachelor(ette)" and "My Big Fat Obnoxious Fiance" offend me; they make a mockery of matrimony.

Whatever happened to INTIMACY? IMO, there are some things that should not be seen by 12-million people!

crazyboy 04-29-2004 12:56 PM

like i said before reality tv is killing the tv . because of reality shows how many more drama will fall im asking you so we need to keep fighting and always said no if someone ask us if we saw the last week episode of the bachelor or survivor ( the 2000th edition ) and if someone aks you why just say : because its boring and not interresting.

Sxygrrl Huntress 04-29-2004 01:26 PM

Why would I say that? I happen to really like reality shows. I think there is a place for both reality shows and scripted dramas on tv.

The Godfather 04-29-2004 01:29 PM

I'm not a big fan of reality TV either (Though I did watch the Apprentice and Paradise Hotel) but SGH is right...one doesn't have to exclude the other...they can have a happy medium..

The problem is that the nets use reality TV too often and some good scripted shows suffer because of it...

Caped_Crusader 04-29-2004 01:47 PM

DISAGREEMENT

im sorry i dont agree with SGH and THE GODFATHER!! No offense!!

SevenSlave ive got your back covered on this one... you say your going to give up TV...IVE ALREADY GAVE IT UP!!! i mean look at me i live in the UK and i download episodes of shows that air in AMERICA!!! I MUST HAVE A SAD SAD LIFE. :) The reason i do this is because all the UK shows are now more reality TV shows and soaps/drama TV (Which both become too outrageous for my interest) so if you give up TV dont worry about it we'll be the two sad TV Giver-uppers in the world. Hey maybe we should start a network/channel of our own:cool:

I think SGH mentioned how there is a time and place for drama and reality TV shows...Im sorry i dont mean to offend you but there IS a time and place for reality TV shows but then what what about the SCI-FI Shows and other shows they deserve places too. Reality tv shows are taking over other shows places so is that called there time and place? no im sorry but that is just wrong Reality tv shows should be allowed to a certain extent!! it worries me when i see that 15 billion viewers watched American Idol/Survivor or whatever but decent well scripted shows like BOP/ Angel pull in a few mere million viewers because of these reality tv shows...that said i have officially gave up TV

P.s I hope i have not offended anybody during my post. i apologise to both SGH and THE GODFATHER as these are just my opinions and those were just their opinions.

SevenSlave 04-29-2004 02:00 PM

Why bother watching?

Nowadays, it seems as if every TV show that requires the use of more than one brain cell is cancelled after 13 eps (Unless it's on Fox -- they do away with `em after TWO eps! )

the panther 04-29-2004 02:20 PM

Honestly, I've never been a big TV watcher. Nowadays I watch some kiddie programs with my brother, Friends, and Smallville. And then there's the occasional According to Jim, George Lopez, or Everybody Loves Raymond. Never watch reality TV.

If there is anything on TV that you like watching, giving it up won't make matters better. And to give any TV up because of reality TV - just don't watch those shows. Watch the shows you like and show the networks that people are still interested in shows that require "the use of more than one brain cell".

darkphoenix 04-29-2004 04:12 PM

I personally would never completely swear off tv (hard to do when you've practically lived off of it) But I can definetly see where SevenSlave is coming from. Network TV has been trash lately. Shows have been getting axed at a staggering rate. Birds of Prey aside, there are so many shows that got kicked off the air before they even had a chance, and shows that have been on for awhile and have a respectable fanbase are even getting the boot. It's hard to watch tv and get into shows when you can't trust that the TV show will be around the next week. And though reality TV isn't the only big problem, it certainly shows how tacky and materialistic hollywood and some of this nation have become. (ex. Joe Millionare, and this new one with Barbara Walters to see who will "Win" this baby for adopting.) *sigh* :hmm:

SevenSlave 04-29-2004 04:23 PM

The BBC is CUTTING BACK on Reality TV:

http://news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=sto...ritain_bbc_dc_1

It's been accused of "dumbing down" its content.

***sigh*** If only the US would follow suit. :hmm:

LisaM 04-29-2004 04:25 PM

If people didn't watch it, the networks wouldn't program it.

SevenSlave 04-29-2004 04:41 PM

I think you've gotta draw the line somewhere (And I ain't talkin' about "The Littlest Groom", either. )

LisaM 04-29-2004 04:53 PM

Television is a for-profit business. Right now, reality shows are what viewers are watching and where networks are making their profits, particularly since they are cheap to produce. It stands to reason that, so long as huge numbers of people continue to tune in to reality shows, networks will continue to air them. They would be crazy not to.

(For the record, the only reality show I ever watched was the last episode of Survivor 1.)

Bcool 04-29-2004 05:56 PM

I'm with Seven also... I given up a lot of TV too. The sitcoms don't make me laugh and the reality shows bore me to death. I recently read an article about reality shows and how they aren't as "real" as you think. Some help reality along a little.

Imagine a conversation you might have with a friend, sibling or spouse in which that person told you that her dog just died. You respond sympathetically, nodding and wincing at all the right moments; you even put your arm around her to show your support. Three hours later, feeling much better, she tells you a really funny joke, and you burst out laughing. Now picture a video editor callously splicing footage of that laughter into your earlier conversation about the dog. Sound extreme? Its exactly the kind of deception some reality producers use to vilify and demonize certain participants. -- Plugged In magazine

My TV viewing as dropped to maybe 4 or 5 shows. There's just not a lot that's very appealing right now.

SevenSlave 04-29-2004 06:43 PM

I'm not going to miss either "Friends" or "Frasier" (Neither one made me laugh.)

It's gotten to the point now where you can figure out the plot in the first ten minutes! :shake:

comicraze22 04-29-2004 10:13 PM

i'm not giving up tv even though the tv stations over here have been riding on the reality wave and losing their originality when coming up with reality shows of their own... i just don't watch those that irks me.

i'm only a fan of Survivor and possibly American Idol and that's about it. now there's even The Restaurant, i'm amazed at how they can use the culinary world as a reality show too. i wonder if they got the idea from Jamie Oliver's program where he trained 15 youths to be chefs. not that the idea is the same but the culinary concept is there.

i would probably stop watching if the tv stations here keep churning out reality shows with no original ideas of their own and taken over the drama time slots and all...

ShadowRunner71 04-30-2004 04:01 AM

i never really thought about it before, but after perusing the tv listings for australia - if anybody can think of a way to tune in to what THEY get i'm all ears!

p3k3 04-30-2004 08:56 AM

we cannot really curse or criticize tv that much. all of us have our favorite shows

Red Mask 04-30-2004 10:04 AM

In my last three years in America I gave up watching TV. Of course, I was in college at the time and didn't wish to waste money on cable. But I couldn't even stand the American broadcast of CNN on campus. Instead, I rented videos of my own choice, broadened my mind with newspapers, books, and comics.

Now I'm watching lots of TV here in the Philippines, I prefer to watch Animax, National Geographic, & Discovery Channel. I still don't like CNN compared to BBC World and Channel News Asia. But I like Buffy and sometimes catch Smallville. I miss Birds of Prey. Why couldn't they continue the series...god dammit.

SevenSlave 04-30-2004 06:58 PM

Maybe I should look on the bright side ...

Ashley's new show could spark a renewed interest in BOP (Enough for a DVD release, maybe?) Some old BOPpers could come out of the woodwork as well.

I noticed a spike in traffic on here the day she did "The Wayne Brady Show" (Brady mentioned The Birds just before she came out.)

Derek Quinzel 04-30-2004 07:05 PM

Though I never like Friends too much, I plan on watching the Finale. And I catch Frasier when I can on CBS/UPN Detroit.....

DOCMIDNITE 04-30-2004 07:53 PM

Ah how I love the thought provoking TV posts..I gotta side with 7..IMO Yes thats In My Opinion TV just sucks! Yes I know people don't all have the same taste. To each his own! But the dregs of shows that are just pumped out...and then when they dion't hit it big instantly they get flushed...Thank God when I was growing up shows were given a chance..and some of them who started out bad were left on so they could grow on an audience..Mash, Cheers and Seinfeld to name a few. It is too bad it can't return to that scenario. (If a show starts out slow..promote it..If it still goes slow then change the night or put it with a hit show!)

Thanks to a special friend here who replaced my tapes when they jammed and finally got me the finale. BOP had such potential (yes I am a sucker for any hero based comic show..I loved The Flash) after reading all of Han's comments about the production it was a wonder it even got to the 13 episodes. This show should have been allowed to run the allotted 26 episodes and then evaluate it from there.
Unfortunately the networks can't see past the quick cash!!!!if it dosn't hit immediately..dump it.

As for reality TV..If I could access a regurgitating smilie I would post it now.

Much like DQ I can't wait for Battlestart Galactica...as of now I watch Wrestling, Third Watch, SVU and Tru Calling. Thats about it!

And as for the Friends spin off! As much as I love Ashley, I would rather have bamboo shoved under my fingernails!!!

Meta Master 05-01-2004 06:36 AM

well this has been a tough few years.

BoP which is my fave show EVER is gone.
Mutant X my other fave, it about to go.
Friends is practically gone
Buffy is gone.

Gosh i just dont know what i am gonna do...Will and Grace and Alias is all i have left!

ShadowRunner71 05-01-2004 05:47 PM

hey meta, maybe we should start some sort of trade agreement with an aussie! take a look at the programs they have - ALOT better viewing than what America's showing at present.

http://www.yourtv.com.au/

"HOLY TIME MACHINES BATMAN!" lol

Meta Master 05-01-2004 07:19 PM

Okay well you get the luggage and i will get the tickets lol.

ShadowRunner71 05-01-2004 08:24 PM

WHY? i've already made contact with an aussie, and am hammering out a deal for tapes. go through and see if there's anything interesting.

Have you gone mad. Giving up on television?
What kind of crazy talk is this. Just because a bad show comes on you throw in the towel?
I hate alot of things on TV rightnow, but I'm not giving up on it. I hope to god you snap out of this.

SevenSlave 05-08-2004 07:15 PM

What have I got to watch?

Lame reality shows starring drama queens who fight over a bowl of rice? Insipid sitcoms which should've been put out of their misery long ago? (Don't get me started on the laugh track; I HATE being cued to laugh at lousy writing! )

Of course, this is to say nothing of the proliferation of cop/family dramas clogging the airwaves. Yawn.

GL2814 05-08-2004 07:18 PM

It's all crazy talk.
Yeah the reality shows suck, but there are some shows out there worth watching.

Red Mask 05-09-2004 06:21 PM

Check out your local TV Guide. Or whatever pleases you. I have the good fortune of finally watching the last season of Buffy over here. Think of something.

SevenSlave 05-13-2004 07:38 AM

Why is it that everything I like (Max Headroom, The Flash, BOP, etc.) gets cancelled after thirteen eps? :weep:

Meanwhile, brain-rotting mush (Survivor, Touched By An Angel, etc.) seems to go on forever. :(

srfrgrl 05-13-2004 12:08 PM

There are still some good show left. Like ER, Third Watch, CSI, Law & Order, Will & Grace, According to Jim, My Wife & Kids, Eight Simple Rules, The George Lopez Show, Reba, Everyone Loves Raymond, King of Queens, and of course anything on the travel channel!!

If you have nothing better to watch check out some of these!

SevenSlave 05-13-2004 02:23 PM

I'd tell you what I think of the show's concept of God ... but I don't want the mods after me for going :offtopic: .

the panther 05-13-2004 02:33 PM

LOL... ahem. I'd go off-topic too to probably agree with you... but I won't. I'll just say that it used to be a good show when it first aired. I lost all and any interest when I turned 9. It's kinda gone downhill since then.

Bcool 05-16-2004 11:47 PM

OT... I have to agree with Seven on Touched By an Angel... there were things I liked abou the show and then others I really didn't... let's just say I'm not sorry it's gone.

I never really watched Friends but I'll probably at lest try Joey this fall... Always thought Matt LeBlanc was kinda cool but the real reason is of cores the amazing Ms. Scott... I just hope she has a role that does her justice... ie; not just an over used "blond," "sexy," "love intrest" character...

MethyLBroMidE 05-22-2004 07:57 PM

Speaking of God, there's this other show Joan of Arcadia. I only saw one episode though, dont have access to TV much.
